“Yes, actually. I don’t know if you noticed, but you don’t often agree with me.” The elevator doors opened. “You ready?”
“For what?”
“Stage two.”
“What do I have to do for stage two?”
“First, we go to room 315, and you wait for me there until I come back.”
“What areyougoing to do?”
“Break into a few rooms.”
“All of them?”
“No. Just the occupied ones.”
Charlotte thought for a moment. “The keys missing on the wall? Is that how you work it out?”
“Very good.”
“It’s more straightforward than I expected it to be.”
“What did you think I would do?”
“Something I wouldn’t have been able to figure out.”
“Like I said, you’re a natural.” He opened the door to the room. “Make yourself comfortable. I shouldn’t be too long.”
“You sure you don’t need me for anything else?”
“No. It’s best if you stay put for this next part.”
“What if something happens?”
“Like what?”
“I don’t know. Anything. What if you don’t come back?”
“I will.”
“But what if you don’t?”
“Drop the key at the door and go tell Maddy what happened.”
“I thought I wasn’t supposed to tell her.”
“If I don’t come back, then I’m probably dead, so she can’t kill me.”
“Don’t say that.”
“It was a joke.”
“My stomach is in knots. I can’t take jokes like that.”
“Are you scared? You look like you’re handling it great.”
“Acting.”
