“I’ll tell you later.” Charlotte grabbed her purse and shoved the gun inside.

“Thanks, Maddy,” Tony said. “Very helpful. I’ll come visit you soon.”

“As long as you bring me some goodies.”

“Anything in particular?”

“Whatever it is, make sure it’s full of sugar.”

“Got it.” He ended the call.

Charlotte looked between the two men. “This wasn’t real?”

“No,” Will said.

“I could have shot someone.”

“I know.”

“Why’d you do it?”

“It’s what I told Maddy,” Tony said. “A training exercise.”

Charlotte shook her head and looked at Will, who looked at the floor.

“A training exercise, huh? You could have told me.”

“The gun was unforeseen. You should have told me you brought a weapon.”

“I didn’t think it mattered. I brought it because it made me feel better.”

“You wouldn’t have been able to do that if we’d been meeting the real Antonio. He would have checked.”

She scoffed. “I can’t believe this.”

“I’m sorry.”

She approached Tony and shook his hand. “I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused. I didn’t mean to scare you.”

“No inconvenience. I enjoyed it. Not the gun part, but besides that. It’s been enlightening. You turned the tables on both of us, and that’s not an easy thing to do.”

“I guess I should be flattered.”

“Yes. You should. Will, you have to admit, she handled that situation marvelously.”

“Too marvelously.” Will still wouldn’t look at her.

“Still. Maybe she can pull it off after all.”

“What?” Charlotte stepped up to Will, forcing him to look at her. “What is he saying? So you really did expect me to fail? Or to be too scared to continue?”

“I…thought you might.”

“So that’s what this is all really about? This wasn’t a training exercise. You wanted me to drop out of this whole operation.”

“I wanted you to know what you would be facing. That’s why you couldn’t know it wasn’t real.”

“And if I hadn’t brought a gun? What would have happened?”
