“What do you mean? No one was going to kill you.”

“But you expected it to scare me. It did. But not enough.” She shook her head. “I don’t know what you’re so worried about. You and Maddy put your lives on the line every time you meet with Antonio. Why not me?”

“Because it’s different.”

“Why?”

“Because it’s our job.”

“And now it’s mine. I can do this. You said so yourself. You said I exceeded your expectation, but all you really want me to do is run away scared. Well, too bad. I’ve proven to you I’m not a coward. I can handle myself.”

“We can talk about this later.”

“No. I’m not leaving until you admit I can do this.”

He pinched the bridge of his nose. “Charlotte, that’s not—why are you so stubborn?”

“You said if you wanted out, you’d tell me. You promised not to play games.”

“I know.”

“Then what’s this all about? Why do all of this?”

“I can’t lose you. I won’t.”

“Lose me?” What was he saying?

“If anything happened to you, Maddy would never forgive me.”

“So you’re afraid of what Maddy will think.”

“No, that’s not—”

“She’s already given me her blessing to take her place. She’s agreed. You’re the holdout. If anything happens to me, it won’t be your fault.”

“I’m not going to keep talking about this right now. Go back to the hotel, and we’ll discuss it once we’ve both cooled off.”

“Cooled off? I don’t see what you have to be angry about. Should I apologize that I did so well?”

“Charlotte.”

“What?”

“Can we please go?”

“No.”

“Fine.” Will turned and walked out the door. “Do whatever you want. I’m leaving.”

“I can’t believe him,” Charlotte growled.

“Sorry about all of this,” Tony said.

“You have nothing to apologize for. You were doing him a favor, right?”

“I guess. Listen, if it helps, I think you did great, but this is Will’s territory. Maybe you should take his advice and let it go.”

“You’re his friend. Of course you’re going to be on his side.”
