“She stayed in the room?”

“No. Once I was in the hall, I turned, and she was gone.”

“Gone.”

“Yeah.”

“You mean she disappeared?”

“Yeah.”

“Could she have snuck out past you?”

“No. I don’t know if she was an angel or what.”

“Wow.”

“I didn’t stay long trying to figure it out. I went back out the way I’d come in, praying that no one would find me while I was escaping and they didn’t. I didn’t see anyone, and when I got outside, the sun was rising, so I started walking.”

“And no one saw you leave?”

“No.”

“How’d you know where to go?”

“The girl said follow the sun, so I did, making sure I watched the buildings I passed so I knew my way back, like she said. Then I ended up at a police station.”

“And you led them back to the building.”

“I did. But it wasn’t just that. Apparently, that was the center of their operation. The police saved a bunch of girls and got some top-level guys who had information onthetop guy.”

“That is quite a story. No wonder you’re not worried about this operation. This is a walk in the park for you.”

“Sort of. This time, I’m doing it willingly.”

“But you brought down the top guy in a trafficking ring. That’s amazing.”

“I didn’t. They put a lot of them away, but the one they were after, he got away in the end.”

“Who was it?”

“A short stocky guy with a big nose named Aniel Soto. Every now and then, I do a search to see if he’s in the news, but there’s been nothing.”

“Why did you have to come home and turn your life upside down?”

“A story was leaked about my involvement. It named me as the reason for the big bust. When I came back to the states, the authorities here didn’t think I had anything to worry about, but the police in Venezuela were adamant in their concern that Mr. Soto could come looking for me. They suggested I do what I could to disappear, or at the very least, take precautions. The article called me Charlie Rochedale, so I started going by Charlotte and changed my last name to Thomson.”

“That must have been hard.”

“In some ways. My relationship with Maddy was already strained, so losing her was barely noticeable. And because I work for myself, I only needed to find a new place to set up where no one knew me. I found a small town out of the way and made a new life for myself there.”

“That’s amazing.”

“It is. Problem was, it ignited something inside of me that kept burning. I found settling in a small town to be difficult.”

“That’s why you were so ready to take on this job.”

“Not such a bad thing for me, but it’s turned out to be a headache for you. I made a difference, and I want to do that again. That’s why I’m so determined to help now.”
