She closed her eyes but didn’t move.

“Ignoring me won’t help your situation either.”

“I’m not ignoring you. I just have nothing to say.”

“No? That’s too bad. Perhaps you don’t realize what a precarious situation you find yourself in. I hold the power of life and death over you.”

“Good for you.”

“You don’t believe I will hurt you?”

“I don’t care. Kill me if you want.”

“Death is not the only option. I can make you suffer.”

“Okay.”

“Okay? That’s all you have to say?”

She turned on him. Somewhere through the fog of fear, she was angry. “What do you want me to say?”

“For one, I’d love for you to tell me how you did it.”

“How I did what?”

“How did you find us?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“My operation in Venezuela. No one had ever been able to find us. How did you?”

“I didn’t. I was kidnapped.”

“By who?”

She crossed her arms against a chill that was not related to the temperature. “Whoever it was you had working for you. She brought me to your hideout.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know her name. She didn’t tell me. She spoke English and said she could help me because I’d gotten lost. She said she was taking me to the police, and instead, she brought me to your place.”

“That’s it?”

“She gave me to one of your guys, and he locked me in a room. I escaped, so I went to the police.”

“You’re not going to even try to be creative with your lies?”

“I’m not lying. That’s what happened.”

“You’re innocent in all of this. Is that what you’re saying? It was all a big accident? I don’t know how long you’ve been doing this, but if you’re going to make up a story, you need to at least make it plausible.”

“I don’t work for any law enforcement agency.”

“A contractor?”

“No. No one. I got lost and was brought to your building. I do voiceover acting as a job. I live in a little house in the suburbs. That’s it. I have no training.”

“No training? You expect me to believe that Maddison and Will brought you in here untrained?”
