“Will taught me a little, but that’s it.”

“And you were forcibly taken to my facility and escaped a building that no one has ever escaped from with no training? It’s just not possible.”

“I don’t know what to say. You wanted to know what happened. That’s what happened.”

“You destroyed my most profitable business by escaping on accident.”

“I guess so.”

“The thing is, I’d like to get back into the business. But I also consider myself to be an intelligent man, and that means learning from mistakes like how to avoid any mishaps relating to escapees into the future.”

“You want me to help you start up a business that exploits young women? You kidnap and abuse innocent girls, and I’m supposed to be a part of that?”

“If you’d like to live out of the rest of your life in something close to comfort. Was there an inside man, perhaps? Tell me his name, and we can move on to more agreeable topics. Your stay with me doesn’t have to be unpleasant. Tell me how you were able to bring the police to my headquarters, and I can promise you that no harm will come to you. Perhaps one day you won’t even want to leave. But I want names. You couldn’t have done this on your own.”

“First of all, there is nothing you could say or do that would make me want to stay with you. But if you promise to let me go, I’ll tell you everything I know.”

“No. That is an impossibility. But I may spare your sister.”

Charlotte closed her eyes. “She’s not dead yet?”

“Tell me what you know, and we can negotiate.”

She considered lying to him. If she made up a name, she could give her sister more time, even if Will was lost.

God, how can this be happening? It wasn’t that long ago she was bemoaning her boring life. She’d give anything to go back to that life, even if he meant she didn’t have a relationship with Maddy. At least her sister would be alive. If she’d never agreed to fill in on this job, none of this would have happened. Why would God bring her back into a nightmare she thought was in her past?

“Well?”

“I was locked in a room with another girl, younger than me. She opened the door and let me out.”

“A girl who was locked in the room with you?”

“Yes.”

“She unlocked your room from the inside?”

“Yes.”

“Her name?”

“She didn’t say, and I didn’t ask. She had long dark hair and brown eyes.” She only told him about the girl because she knew he’d never find her.

“Any distinguishing features?”

“Not that I could see.”

“And after you left the room? Did she bring you to the police?”

“No. She disappeared.”

Antonio’s lips flattened. “Are you playing games with me? It’s not a good idea.” He walked close to her so his face was only inches from hers. She kept her eyes on the floor, but he grabbed her chin and lifted her face. “We’ve had our fun, but now it’s time to think about your losses. If you want to save your sister, you’ll have to do better than that.”

“I can’t do any better than that unless I lie to you.”

“Very well.” He shoved her head back and let her go. “You can expect a miserable rest of your life, however long that happens to be.” He turned and went out the door, slamming it behind him.

She ran to it and banged hard. “Please. I’m telling you the truth!” She was met with only silence.
