“I’m okay.”

“No, you’re not.” Zane patted my shoulder in a way that was both patronizing and comforting. “And we need to get out of here before I knock both Ray and Corey on their sorry asses.”

“What happened?” I asked Zane as River headed toward the lockers. “I kind of blocked everything out for a bit there.”

“They let those assholes go. Said we can’t prove you weren’t the aggressor and let them drive away.” He sat next to me and put one hand on the small of my back.

“I’m fine.”

“Keep telling yourself that. I’m not mopping your brains off the floor if you crack your head open, so deal with it.”

“Pretty sure that would be the cleaners’ job.”

“Probably. At least those douche canoes were drunk. Maybe they’ll wrap that piece-of-shit car around a tree and do the world a favor.”

“Let’s go.” River came to stand in front of us, his arms loaded down with backpacks and hoodies.

I bit back a groan as they hauled me off the bench.

“Here.” River held up my zip-up hoodie, the front spread open so I could slip into it.

Feeling like a giant tool, I let the twins help me into my sweater and held still as River zipped it up.

“Take this.” Nick pressed a wad of clean gauze in my hand, his blue eyes filled with fear and concern.

I went to swipe at the trickle of wetness streaking down my cheek with the sleeve of my sweater.

River slapped my hand away. “Use the gauze, dumbass.”

“Fuck you.” I pressed the gauze to the cut.

“Sorry, babe, you’re not my type.” He blew me a kiss. “Now quit being difficult. We’re taking you to the ER.”

“I’m fine. I just need to sleep it off.”

“Your head is bleeding and you’d fall on your ass if my brother wasn’t holding you up.” River put his hands on his hips in adon’t fuck with meway. “You’re going to the damn ER so they can check you for a head injury.”

“It’s just a cut.”

“You got hit in the head with a fucking bottle.” River moved to my other side and grasped my waist. “I’m not risking you dying in your sleep tonight. I donotwant that on my conscience.”

“Same.” Zane adjusted his grip on me and took a step forward.

“Text me tomorrow so I know you’re not dead,” Nick said worriedly.

“I’m not going to die. They’re just being dramatic.”

“I can’t believe that chick lied after you saved her sorry ass,” Dash said from a few feet away.

“It’s not her fault,” I said wearily. “She had to go home with that asshole. And he was way too comfortable putting his hands on her. I don’t blame her for siding with her abuser.”

“Make sure you actually get seen when you go to the hospital.” Kai stood behind Nick. “No walking out as soon as they drop you off.”

“I don’t need a doctor for a stupid sprained wrist and a cut forehead.”

In unison, the twins let go of me and stepped back. My knee buckled and I pitched forward. They caught me before I could fall, but their point had been made.

“Promise me or I’m calling Eli to come and sit with you,” Kai said.
