“You kill?”

“I was raised to kill. But I don’t kill without reason.”

“You may have to kill again.”

“No. I want out.”

“Out? There is no out.” I watch him shift again on the bed, trying to sit himself up. There’s no use. He can’t function on his own.

“I’ll help you get better, and you help me get out of here. Then I’ll tell you all you want to know that I can answer.”

“Your father?”

“Will kill me if he knows.” He nods his head as tears leak down his blood-streaked cheeks. I hate it. I hate the pain I see in him. I hate they did this. I hate Jeremy for doing it. How could he? What would possess him to do such a thing? As I think about it, a chill works its way down my spine. Tears spring to my own eyes, and I quickly wipe them away.

“You’re not joking.”

“No. I’m not. I need out.” He seems to think about his situation for a long minute before nodding.

“I want answers,” he says.

“I’ll do the best I can.”

“Fine. You have a deal,” Mystic agrees.

Chapter 7

Mystic

Ifeel like I made a deal with the devil himself. Something is wrong here. I don’t know what, but I will find out.

This girl, Kyla, has helped me bathe, eat, and move. She hasn’t given me any information yet, and I understand why.

My heart just doesn’t feel right. Something about her doesn’t feel right. Maybe it’s because she’s in my space. In my house. The place I shared with my wife and daughter. The one place I thought was my safe haven. That’s all changed now. Everything is gone. They’re gone. I can’t wrap my head around that. I can’t make myself believe it.

It hurts. So bad. I can’t even describe the pain that I feel. My chest is in a constant knot of memories. I can’t even lay them to rest because the bastard in charge took them, took their bodies.

“How soon can I get out of here?” Kyla asks. It’s been two weeks. Two weeks of me trying to heal my body but not my heart.

“Soon.”

“As in, how long?” I look up from my computer at the woman in front of me. She’s young. Younger than I originally thought she was.

“Maybe another week. I need to wait for some paperwork to arrive,” I tell her. She nods her head before she goes back to her breakfast.

“The sooner, the better. I don’t want to get caught here,” she admits.

“How would you? They don’t know where you are, right?” Kyla shakes her head as she eats her eggs.

“No, and judging by the fact they didn’t show up here again, I’d say I’m safe for now.”

“They wouldn’t think you’d come back here?”

“No.”

“Are you going to give me any information?”

“When I’m assured I’ll be out of here, yes. I made a promise, Mystic. I stick by my word.” I nod my head now. She has stuck by her word since she’s been here.
