“I didn’t have a choice.”

“No, you didn’t.” he knows I couldn’t have stopped them. He knows I couldn’t have changed the outcome as much as I wish I could have. Tears burn my eyes as I glance around before looking back at him.

“You do this too?”

“I have no choice. This is my life.”

“They took my life,” he says softly.

“There’s nothing I can do now. I need your help.”

“What the hell could you possibly need?” he asks.

“I need to disappear.”

“What?”

“I need to be gone. I need to be untrackable.” He shakes his head before rubbing at his temples.

“I can’t even think straight,” he whispers. I nodded, knowing all this, and I didn’t plan on forcing the issue until he felt better. I reach for him, helping him to his feet. He stumbles and nearly takes us down, but I hold him upright. He leans on me as I lead him through the house and to the bedroom.

“Not in here,” he says as if it pains him to be near the room. This must have been his and his wife’s room. I walk past it and to the next room and lead him inside. I lay him on the bed, blood seeping into the crisp white blanket.

“I’m not good at this,” I tell him.

“At what?”

“Helping others,” I admit. He nods his head.

“Can you answer questions?” he asks. I shrug. I don’t know if I have the answers he’s looking for.

“I can try.”

“Why them?”

“I don’t know. They shouldn’t have been killed. You should have been, but my father isn’t finished with you yet.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means he will be back. They will be back,” I tell him.

“When?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who’s your father?”

“I need help first. I need to disappear,” I remind him once more.

“Why?”

“Do you always ask this many questions?”

“Yeah, I do. Why?”

I watch him hold his side as he shifts on the bed, wincing in pain.

“I can’t do this anymore, not after what they did to …” I let that trail off. I don’t need to repeat what they did to his family, and I can’t go through that again. It was wrong. We kill for a reason. They didn’t do anything wrong, and I can’t do that again. I can’t be a witness to that anymore. I want out.
