“I’m right down the hall if you need me.” I nod once more and watch as Jake leaves the room but not before taking one last look at Axel.

Chapter 13

Mystic

“I’m focused motherfucker,” I state into the line. I took a shower and got my ass back to work for Grave on a few minor things he needed to take care of. I couldn’t sleep, no matter how hard I tried.

“You sure?”

“Yeah, I’m sure. Give me thirty seconds, and I’ll have an address for you,” I answer as I type away at the keyboard. That’s when I hear something behind me. I grab my gun and spin around in my chair to see Kyla standing in the doorway of my bedroom. I blow out a breath and set the gun back on the desk, rattling off the address to Grave, and then hit the end call button. Then I’m on my feet, facing her.

“You okay?”

“Hard to sleep.”

“I know how that is. You want to talk?”

“Is this what you do?” she asks, nodding toward the computer on the desk behind me.

“It’s what I do. It can be stressful, but for the most part, I work with the same people over and over again. They pay me well for the information they want.”

“Back then, it was about diamonds.”

“I don’t know anything about diamonds. I wasn’t lying. I may have pulled an address or some other type of information for someone I shouldn’t have, but I was never involved.”

“But you have a close group you work for?” she asks me, and I nod.

“Yeah. They’re going to help me,” I inform her.

“Help you what?”

“Finish what I started five years ago. I started looking into them, finding out what I could. I have a file on them, but … fuck, everything just got to be too much for me.”

“I get it. I’m sure that had to be hard,” she says softly.

“What about you? Did you ever meet anyone?”

“I wasn’t really looking. There’s a guy in an MC that I was good friends with. He’s the one who got me out of there. I promised him I would call.”

“You need a phone?” She nods, looking so shy. So innocent. I grab the burner phone off the desk and walk over to hand it to her. Our fingers touch, and a bolt of electricity shoots like fire down my arm. I don’t pull away quickly; maybe that was my first mistake. I should have. She searches my face, my eyes, for something.

“What is it?”

“You look lost still, Jake. I hate that for you.” I lower my head slightly as she takes the phone and dials. She doesn’t have to stay here, but for some reason, she does, and I listen to the one-sided conversation.

Kyla says what she needs to and then hangs up, passing me the phone back. I toss it back on the table before turning back to face her.

“Why can’t you sleep?”

“I don’t know. I think it’s all just so much to take in.”

“They wouldn’t think to look here, Kyla.”

“But they may piece it together, and that scares the hell out of me. What would they do to me? To Axel? I can’t let anything happen to him, so the sooner I get out of here, the better.”

“Didn’t you listen to me? I’m going to handle this.”

“Can you? That’s a lot of people, Jake.”
