“And I have connections. I know what I’m up against, and your father will die. He ordered the hit on my family, Kyla. It’s been a long time coming,” I inform her. She blinks those pretty brown eyes and stares into my goddamn soul. That’s when I move. I wrap my hand around the nape of her neck and kiss her like it may be the last thing I ever do. A part of my heart aches while doing it. A part of me feels like it’s wrong, but the other part tells me to go for it and kiss her, so I do.
I’m breathless when I pull back and look into her eyes. I can see the fear, the lust, the hesitancy. I can see it all just like the first time.
Kyla doesn’t say anything as I walk her backward toward the bed. Her legs hit the mattress, and she falls back onto it before I climb over her and kiss her again.
“I haven’t wanted anyone since you left,” I admit.
“You haven’t been with anyone?” she asks, uncertain about what I’m saying. I shake my head. There hasn’t been anyone since her that night.
“No one.”
“I … I haven’t been with anyone either, Jake. I was always looking over my shoulder, thinking they could have sent someone to hurt me.”
“No one is going to hurt you,” I tell her once more before she slams her lips against mine. She kisses me roughly, and I let her. She needs this as much as I do.
I move my lips down her neck before yanking her shirt up and over her head. She’s in nothing but a pair of panties, and my cock awakens for her. All of this almost feels wrong. I shouldn’t be doing this. I shouldn’t kiss or touch her in a house that was supposed to be for my family. The thought hits me hard, and I pull away from her and sit on the edge of the bed. Kyla moves, coming to sit next to me.
“It’s okay,” she whispers, covering my hand with hers.
“Is it?”
“It is. I’ll go.” She starts to stand when I grab her hand and pull her back down next to me.
“I don’t want you to go.”
“Then what is it?” she asks. I turn my head and look at her, really look at her. She’s beautiful. Perfect, and she has my son.
“It … it feels like a betrayal.”
“Then we don’t do anything, Jake. It’s okay.”
“I thought about you. A lot, actually. After spending a whole month with you, day and night, I got to know you. I liked what I knew, Kyla. And that felt wrong.”
“I don’t know what to say to you. I don’t think it’s wrong. I think we were meant to find each other, but that doesn’t mean we have to go any further than this, Jake.”
“I want my son.”
“And you’ll see him. I won’t take him away from you.”
“What if I want you too?”
“Then I’m here. There is no need to rush things.” My heart is in my throat. I don’t know what to say here. So I don’t say anything. Instead, I reach for her, pull her into me once more, and kiss her. Kyla kisses me back right before I hear Axel calling for his mom. I break our kiss and grab her shirt, passing it to her. She slides it on, and we both stand, walking back to Axel's bedroom.
“I couldn’t sleep, Mommy,” he says as I look at him. He reminds me of Jenny when she was that age. She always woke up from some sort of dream looking for her mom.
“It’s okay. We can sing like we always do,” Kyla tells him. She motions for me to come and sit next to her. She cradles Axel in her arms and softly sings him a song as she holds him tightly. I reach up and run my fingers through his hair, and my heart leaps in my chest. This is my son. My son.
It’s hard to believe. It’s hard to imagine that I have a little boy at my age, but he is slowly falling asleep in his mom’s arms. A tear falls down my cheek, but I quickly wipe it away.
Kyla lays Axel back on the bed and sits down next to him, keeping him tucked close to her before she turns her head, looks over her shoulder, and says, “Stay with us.” I nod and lay down behind her, wrapping my arm around her and finding Axel’s little hand. I take it in mine and close my eyes, falling asleep easier than I have in a long time.

“Don’t wake him up, Axel,” I tell him as he sits and stares at Jake, who is still sound asleep.
“Why not?”
