“Yeah. I never met a stranger. As I got older, I realized that not all people were good people, but I didn’t care at his age. I wanted to meet everyone. My parents would get so mad at me.”

“Are they still alive?”

“They are. They live in New York. I’d like you to meet them one day,” I tell her. She looks at me in shock. I can see it all over her face.

“What do you think they’d say about Axel?”

“They’d love him. In fact, I want to tell them soon.”

“You do? You just got him, though.”

“And as much as I don’t want to share him, I think they should know.”

“I’m okay with that.”

“You are?”

“Yeah, I am. You should have them come and visit. I’m sure they’d love to see you too.”

“It has been a while.”

“How long?” she asks me.

“The funeral.”

“Jake. Are you serious? They’re your parents,” she scolds me.

“It’s hard to face them after what happened. I know it’s my fault.” Kyla snaps now. She pulls away from me and turns to face me, looking pissed.

“That wasn’t your fault. It was my father’s fault. Don’t you ever blame yourself for that.”

“Kyla, I blame myself every day they aren’t here,” I tell her. It’s the truth. I blame myself for them not being here.

“It was my father. If you blame anyone, blame him.”

“He’s going to pay for what he did.”

“I know he will.”

“And you’re okay with that?” I ask her. I need to hear it. I need to know that she’s okay with my plan.

“I’m okay with it.”

“Good. No one will be left standing when I get done with them.”

Chapter 18

Kyla

After I said I’d love to meet his parents, Jake decided sooner rather than later would be perfect. They’re coming here from New York to hear the big news.

I’m nervous as hell that they may not like me or accept Axel because of the way things happened.

“Will you calm down?”

“I can’t. I’ve never met a guy's parents, Jake.”

“Never?”
