“I wasn’t really the take home to mom type of girl, remember?” he chuckles and kisses the top of my head.

“I know. It’s going to be fine. My parents aren’t your typical parents. They won’t question you too much or dig into your background if you don’t want to share.”

“Are you sure? I don’t think telling them I used to be a hitman would go over so well.” Now he laughs again.

“It’s going to be fine. You’ll see. My mom is anxious to hear what the news is.”

“I’m not so anxious to tell her,” I admit. Jake wraps his arms around me and pulls me closer to him.

“Everything is going to be okay, Kyla. I promise.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, I’m sure. You just have to calm down a little.”

“I’m trying.” Axel comes running into the room, looking as adorable as ever with his teddy in his arms.

“Where’re the new people?”

“They aren’t here yet. You’re going to be good, right?” I ask him. We told him he would meet some new people today, and he was excited about it. Axel is like a little sponge. He likes to soak up everything and anyone he can.

“I’ll be good and show them the water!” he says excitedly when the doorbell rings. I look at Jake, and he smiles at me.

“It’s okay.” I nod as he walks over to answer the door. I hear his mom telling him how much she misses him, and I see them hug. That’s when Axel takes it upon himself to run over to them.

“I’m Axel,” he says, holding his hand out. Jake laughs as he pulls Axel up next to him.

“Jake?” his mom asks as he looks down at him.

“I’ll explain it all, but this is Axel,” he gives him a little shove in her direction. “Your grandson.” I feel dizzy. I don’t feel good, that’s for sure, and the more she stands there staring down at him, the worse I feel.

Tears roll down her cheeks as she kneels, pulls him into a hug, and the air is sucked from my lungs. He would never have had this without Jake. My father couldn’t love him. My father wouldn’t hug him. I cover my mouth with my hand as tears fall down my cheeks.

His mom finally pulls away from Axel, and his dad moves in next. They hug him like they’ve known him his whole life, and everything I thought I expected of them slowly slips away.

“Kyla,” Jake calls to me. I can’t stop the tears. Jake turns and walks over to me, pulling me into his arms.

“I told you it would be okay.”

“I just never expected it to be,” I admit as tears wet my cheeks.

“It’s okay, baby. I promise.” I look up at him, never hearing him call me that before, and more tears burst from my eyes. That’s when I feel another hand on my back, which isn’t Axel’s. I turn my head to see Jake’s mom resting her hand on my back.

“It’s okay. I’d like to hear the story,” she says before pulling me into her arms. I never had a mother. Mine died when I was born, and I was left to my father to raise, so being in her arms is hard for me. I try to stop the tears, but they won’t stop. She soothes me and does her best to calm down.

Finally, after what feels like forever, I calm down, and she pulls away.

“I’m Debra.”

“I’m Kyla,” I tell her as she nods and pulls me back into another hug.

“I’m so pleased to meet you.” After I wipe my face, Jake introduces me to his dad, Jake Sr. They seem like great people.

“I ordered in tonight. I figured you wouldn’t want to go out,” Jake tells his parents as he leads them into the dining room, where he has already set the table.

“Look at you thinking of everything. I really don’t want to go out at all while I’m here. I want to spend time with you guys,” Debra says, looking between us.

We sit down for dinner, and I help Axel while they all talk amongst themselves. Jake explains it was just a one-night thing, and now we’re here. He doesn’t go into details, and they don’t ask.
