“So, Kyla. You were raising him on your own?”

“I had friends who helped me. They were lifesavers at the, but I think he’s doing better now he’s here with Jake.” I see the smile tug across Jake’s face. He looks happy. He seems happy.

“I think you have done an amazing job so far. You’re a great mom.” My heart leaps into my throat as tears burn the back of my eyes. No one has called me a good mom before. No one has stopped to look at me like that.

“Thank you,” I choke out.

“You’re very welcome. Now, if you don’t mind, I’d like to see the water Axel promised me.” I nod my head as Axel leaps out of his seat.

“You stay with Mrs. Debra, do you hear me?”

“Grandma. You can call me grandma,” she adds.

“I’ll stay with grandma.” Jake Sr. and Debra follow Axel from the dining room and out the door. His hands are moving so rapidly that I can’t imagine what he’s telling them. That’s when I burst into tears. Jake stands and walks over, pulling me out of the chair.

“I’m sorry. I’m not used to all of this,” I tell him.

“I know. It’s a lot to take in. You’re doing great, though.”

“I can’t stop crying, Jake.”

“You’ve never had this, Kyla. It’s okay to be emotional.”

“I just don’t want to embarrass myself in front of them.”

“You’re not. They get it.”

“Are you sure this is all okay? I feel like we’re overstepping here.”

“Because of Yasmine and Jenny?”

“Well, yeah. This was to be their home, Jake. I don’t feel right.”

“I’ve thought about it. I’ve cried about it. Fuck, Kyla. It’s hard for me, too, but I know what I want. If we need to find a different house, we will, if that will make you feel better.”

“What?”

“We’ll find a new house,” he tells me.

“You would do that?”

“Of course, I would. I want you to be okay with me, Kyla. I don’t want you feeling anything but happiness.” More tears. It seems like that’s all I do is cry. I have so many emotions running through me all at once.

“I am happy, Jake.”

“Good. That’s all I want for you and Axel. I want you both happy.”

Chapter 19

Mystic

“Yeah, I’m sending it over now. You should have it in a few minutes,” I tell the client I’m working with that his information is on the way.

“Thanks, brother. Appreciate it,” he responds before the line goes dead. I set the phone on the desk and finish the email I was working on before sending it. Then I delete everything, just like always. No one will find that shit, no matter how hard they try. They’ll have nothing on me.

“Hard at work?” I look over my shoulder when I hear my mom. I nod once and shove out of my chair and walk toward her, pulling her into a hug.

“I’m glad you’re here.”
