“Nothing personal? You had my family killed!”

“And yet I let you live,” he retorts, motioning to me with his gun.

“For what? Why?”

“For future use, of course.”

“You think I’d actually do a damn thing for you after what you did?” I ask him.

“I think I held the leverage until you stole my daughter away,” he sneers.

“You would have killed her too. Tell me you wouldn’t.”

“Oh, I would have, and that little brat of hers too. There was no use for either of them after she ran from her family,” he affirms. I can’t stop myself. Before I can think or he can respond, I pull the trigger and watch him fall to the floor. Then I walk over and stand above him, gun still aimed at his face.

“You won’t touch my family. Not again.” Then I pull the trigger over and over until my clip is empty, and he’s unrecognizable. I don’t care if it’s overkill. I don’t care if his head is now blown to pieces. I only care that he will never get near Kyla or Axel again.

I take a step back and shake my head, shoving the gun into the back of my jeans before I head back out of his room and down the hall. I meet Mayhem at the stairs and see the question in his eyes.

“It’s over.”

“Good. We got a spot I think you might be interested in,” he says. I nod and follow him down the steps and out the back door. That’s when I see some of the guys digging.

“How did you know?” I ask him.

“We asked a few questions before we killed them.”

“Thanks, Mayhem.”

“Don’t thank me. This needed to happen. You needed the closure.”

“I don’t know how to repay you guys for everything you’ve done.”

“We don’t need a repayment. We do what we do because you’re family. Whether you saw that before or not, you are.” He slaps a hand on my shoulder as I watch them dig. I don’t know how I feel. I don’t know how I should feel.

Chapter 22

Kyla

We stand, Jake with his arm around me, and Axel is in front of us as the coffins are lowered into the ground. It was hard for him to see the coffins like this.

My father had put them into boxes and buried them in the backyard. I don’t know why. Maybe as a reminder to everyone what he was capable of. Or maybe he was sicker in the head than I thought. Either way, the guys found them and dug them back up so they could have a proper burial.

It’s taken a toll on Jake. He’s been lost and a little depressed again. I can see it when I look into his eyes and hate it for him.

He does his best, holding his head high while the coffins are lowered. Tears stream down his cheeks, and it breaks my heart for him.

“I wish I could have known them.”

“Me too.”

“Are you okay?”

“I will be.” He tightens his hold on me, and that’s all I need. I need him. I can’t lose him now that I’ve just gotten him.

“I’m going to let you say goodbye,” I tell him. He tightens his grip even more and shakes his head.

“I need you here.”
