“Jake Murphy.” The man says my name, but that’s it. He eyes me, brown eyes peeking through the ski mask he wears.

“What do you want?”

“It isn’t a matter of what I want. It’s a matter of what you did. Who you aided.”

“My family has nothing to do with this. Let them go,” I tell him. The girls cry, sobs leaving their throats.

“Can’t do that.”

“They have no idea what I do,” I try to plead with the man. It does no good. He ignores my pleas and walks behind my wife, running his fingers along her hair. I start to stand when I’m hit in the back of the head by someone else. Shit, there’s more than one here. I’m dizzy, my head spinning as I right myself and look at the man who seems to be in charge.

“What do you want?” I ask once more.

“Your blood on my hands. I have my orders.”

“From who?” The man chuckles.

“That I can’t tell you.”

“Then how the fuck do I know what I did?”

“You stole from him, my boss. You helped with an elaborate scheme to steal diamonds.”

“I don’t steal,” I tell him as he walks toward Jenny next. He runs the gun barrel through her hair as tears fall down her cheeks.

“No. Perhaps you don’t, but you do assist. That’s what you did, isn’t that right?” he asks. I shake my head when I’m hit again, my body falling forward and hitting the floor. I start to shove myself up when someone grabs my shoulder. Now’s the time to fight. I spin, swinging as I start to stand. It only takes a minute for more men to come out of the shadows and subdue me. My hands are zip-tied behind my back, and my wife’s and daughter’s behind theirs. Troy is next as he looks around the room, confused.

My head is spinning from the hits. My vision is dancing.

“All we need to know is where the diamonds are now,” the man says. I smirk.

“I don’t have shit.”

“As we very well know. I want to know who has them.”

“Clearly, you aren’t as smart as you portray yourself. If you know anything about me, you know I work behind the scenes. I don’t have names,” I tell him. Not true in most cases, but this one was an exception. I don’t have names this time.

“What a pity,” he says before stepping up behind Troy and pressing the gun to the back of his head. It all happens in seconds. The sound, the shot, the blood, the screams. The girls scream before they are both gaged. Their cries break my fucking heart, but I don’t have the answers this guy wants. Troy’s body now lies on the floor next to Jenny, and there’s nothing I can do. Not a damn thing.

“I don’t know anything about diamonds!” I roar this time. The guy turns back to me, just where I wanted him. I want his focus on me and not on them. I need it on me.

“You, of all people, know something. You’re the nerve center of everyone’s little operations. You think we’re stupid?”

“No. I think you’re looking in the wrong place, though.”

“Am I? I have it on good authority you were in on this little scheme. I don’t think I’m in the wrong place at all.”

“You are.”

“I’m not. Now I’m done playing games,” he snaps before stepping behind Yasmine. The gun is pressed to the back of her head while her tear-filled eyes lock with mine.

“Don’t fucking do this! Please!” I beg. I have no shame at this moment. Tears leak down my cheeks because I know how this ends. My chest constricts, and there’s an ache that will never end until they end me. My body is shaking, trembling as I watch what’s happening.

“I want the diamonds. This is your last chance,” he says, motioning for another guy. He walks over and pulls out his gun, pressing it to the back of Jenny’s head. Our eyes lock now. Fear wafting off her. My chest tightens even more. This isn’t happening. This can’t be happening.

“I don’t know anything about diamonds,” I tell him again. There are so many people I’ve worked with. So many who could have these diamonds. I wrack my brain, trying to sort through every transaction I’ve done, but I come up blank.

“Well then. That’s too bad,” he declares before nodding toward his friend. The gun shot is louder this time. At least, to me, it is. My little girl, the one thing I love most in this world, falls to the floor in front of me. I roar and shove myself up to be greeted by a fist to the face, then another. I stumble back and come back full force when a fist slams into my stomach, knocking the air from my lungs. I wheeze in a breath before trying to right myself again, but it’s no use. I can’t. My body is being beaten. I feel the kicks to my ribs as my eyes find Yasmine’s. Tears leak down my cheeks as I look at her. They pull the fucking trigger taking what’s left of my life, and all I can do is lie here being beaten.
