“I would never do that to you,” I said. “I could absolutely commit to you. If you and I are together, then we’re together. You know I’m not a cheater.”

“I know that,” she agreed with a smile. “I guess that’s one of the perks.”

“What?”

“I’ve been talking to Izzy about this,” she said. “I told her I was worried about crossing that line with you because we were such good friends. I was worried we wouldn’t be able to have that exciting getting-to-know-you phase because we already know everything about each other. I thought you might be bored. I don’t have any secrets for you to discover and vice versa. She said it was a good thing because I know your character. I know who you are. The only part of you I don’t know is, you know.”

I smirked. “Yet. Assuming you’re ready to take that plunge.”

“As long as you’re certain our friendship would not be destroyed,” she said. “I can’t lose you as a friend. The last two weeks has been tough. I’m so used to talking to you every day, even if it’s just to talk about what we ate for breakfast. I feel like I’m missing an arm or something.”

I smiled and moved to sit beside her on the couch. “I know the feeling. I’m glad we talked.”

“Me too,” she said. “Even if it was pretty scandalous how you arranged this whole thing.”

It was like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. Finally, we were both on the same page. It was clear that there was something more between us. We both saw it. That was all I could ask for. I just wanted the chance to see if the feelings I had for her were as genuine as I thought them to be.

My heart was full. I couldn’t believe he was feeling the same way I was. It was exactly what I hoped. It was the best possible outcome. But now that we knew we were both on the same page, I wasn’t sure what came next. Thinking about crossing the line was a lot different than planning the event. Like, did we just get right down to business? Did we set ground rules? Was I going to see him naked? Was he going to see me naked? Obviously, yes, but whoa. That was going to be weird and exciting.

I still couldn’t believe it. I’d finally mustered up the courage to tell my best friend that I’ve been in love with him for years, and he felt the same way. I was ecstatic and relieved, but now I didn’t know what to do next. We’d been friends for so long, and I didn’t want to ruin that. But at the same time, I couldn’t deny these feelings I had for him.

“Are you okay?” Luke asked.

“Yes,” I replied in a shrill voice.

“You got quiet,” he said. “Are you sure you’re okay with this? I don’t want you to do anything you don’t want to.”

“No, no.” I shook my head. “I was just thinking.”

“About what?”

“Us,” I replied. “You can’t tell me this isn’t weird.”

“We’re just sitting here…” he came back.

“In Julia’s house.” I gestured around the area. “Which by the way, damn.”

“What do you mean, damn?” He laughed.

“Seriously! Look at this place! It’s gorgeous.”

Luke’s place was nice as well, but I really loved the comfortable home Julia had created. The natural light streamed in from the oversized windows, illuminating the room and highlighting the intricate details of the space. The high ceilings gave the room an airy, open feel, making it the perfect place to unwind after a long day.

“You grew up in a house ten times as big as this place,” he commented.

“Yes, but I don’t live there now,” I said.

I scooted back on the plush, comfortable couch. I sank into the cushions, feeling the softness envelop me. The space was elegantly decorated with modern furnishings and tasteful artwork, giving it a sophisticated yet cozy vibe. The neutral color palette created a calming atmosphere. Luke’s place was a little cold and very bachelor-like.

In the corner of the room, a large flat-screen TV hung on the wall. The kitchen flowed seamlessly into the living area, and the stainless-steel appliances and marble countertops exuded luxury. I would love to have a place like this one day. One far away day.

“Are you okay?” he asked softly.

“I am.” I smiled. “I think I’m stunned.”
