“Fancy.”

“She deserves it. I want her to see what it would be like to date me. I treat my women good. I just hope she has a good time. I want everything to be perfect.”

“Relax,” he said. “Just enjoy the moment. You guys have known each other for a long time, so just let it flow naturally.”

He was right. I needed to let go of my nerves and just enjoy the moment. I was finally going on a date with the woman I had been crazy about for years, and I didn’t want to ruin it with my own anxieties.

“I will,” I said. “I’m going to shower. I’ve got a hot date and I have to look good.”

“Be good to her,” he said. “I will kick your ass if you fuck with her.”

I ended the call and walked to my bedroom. As I got ready for the date, I felt a sense of excitement and nervousness wash over me. But at the same time, I felt a sense of hope and possibility. Who knew, maybe this could be the start of something special.

I walked out the door, ready to meet the woman who had captured my heart for so long. And for the first time in a long time, I felt truly alive. I could almost see my future and I was sure it was her I saw on my arm.

As I pulled up to her apartment building and shook my head. I hated that she lived here. I tried to convince her to let me cover her rent in a better place, but she was too damn stubborn. She wanted to do it on her own. She wanted to pay her own way. Unfortunately, she couldn’t pay much. I gave my car a last look, hoping it would still be there when I returned.

I walked up to the third floor. The hall had a very distinct odor. I couldn’t tell if it was shit, piss, or vomit laced with nicotine. I wondered if her dad knew where she lived. I knew he would lose his shit if he saw the building. I knocked on the door with my heart racing with anticipation. This was our first official date and I wanted it to be perfect. I couldn’t believe it was finally happening.

She opened the door with a pretty smile. I was struck by how beautiful she looked. She had always been stunning, but tonight she was something else entirely. I couldn’t help but stare.

“Hi,” I said, trying to play it cool.

“Hi.”

“You look hot,” I blurted out. “Do you wear this on all your dates?”

“This old thing?” She laughed.

“You’re gorgeous,” I said. “And it’s so weird I can say that now and mean it.”

“Are you saying you didn’t mean it before?” she teased.

“Oh no.” I shook my head. “I meant it, but I meant it as a friend. Today, I mean it as a man who wants to get very, very close to you.”

As we drove to the restaurant, we talked about everything and nothing at the same time. It was like we had been doing this forever, but at the same time, everything felt new and exciting. We had been to dinner a hundred times. This was different.

We walked into the restaurant and were quickly shown to our table. I looked over at Emmy and smiled. She looked stunning in her red dress. I couldn’t stop staring at her. She smiled at me, and I felt my nerves start to calm.

It was one of the fanciest restaurants in the city. I wasn’t used to this kind of luxury. I could afford it, but I was more of a simple guy. I liked the finer things in life, but I also liked a burger and cold beer. As we sat down, I tried to act cool and collected, but inside I was a ball of nerves. I didn’t know why I was nervous. It was just a meal with Emmy.

As we perused the menu, I could feel my mouth watering at the thought of a delicious steak. Emmy must have noticed because she smiled and said, “I heard the ribeye is amazing here.”

“You’ve been here before?” I asked.

“I know my dad is a big fan of this place.” She smiled. “You’ve been here before?”

“I have, but not for a while,” I replied.

I ordered the ribeye, and she ordered the filet mignon. We also ordered a bottle of red wine to share. “Is this weird?” I asked her.

“What?”

“We’re drinking wine and there are candles on the table,” I said. “This is a romantic evening. We’re dressed up and we look good.”

“Yeah, we do,” she agreed.

As we ate, we talked and laughed, and I felt like we were the only two people in the restaurant. The steak was incredible, and the wine was perfect. It was like all the years of knowing each other had led us to this moment, and I didn’t want it to end.
