“Because I’m freaking out!”

“Are you guys just going for a fling?” she asked. “Like just getting your rocks off and calling it good, or do you think this might turn into something real?”

“I think there is a very good chance this could be something real,” I answered. “I already love him. He’s my best friend. But I know we’ll be fine if we don’t get married and live happily ever after. We’ll remain friends.”

“I’m glad it’s working out for you,” she said. “I’m very happy for you. You’ll have to call me tomorrow and tell me all about it.”

“I will.” I smiled. “I absolutely will.”

ChapterSeventeen

Luke

Igot home and tossed my keys and wallet on the table. I had not stopped grinning since I left Emmy. I was so fucking happy. I was relieved and excited for tonight. To know we were both on the same page and the feelings I had been trying to tamp down for so long were reciprocated was such an amazing feeling.

I had to share my joy. Leo was the guy trying to talk me off the ledge the last two weeks. He was the one who helped set up the whole thing with Julia. At first, I was reluctant to go through with the plan. I didn’t like the idea of setting her up, but desperate times called for desperate measures. I knew I couldn’t let it go on another day.

I called Leo, who I suspected was probably still at the office.

“Are you in jail?” he answered.

“I don’t think they let you use your cell phone from jail,” I replied dryly.

“Eh, you’re a lawyer, I’m sure there would be a way for you to get one,” he said.

“I’m not in jail,” I said. “I was just calling to thank you.”

“Thank me?”

“For pushing me to trap Emmy.” I laughed. “I guess a little sneakiness isn’t so bad.”

“She talked to you?”

“Hell, yeah. She was very receptive to what I had to say. We talked and I think things are going to work out very well for us.”

“No shit?” he asked.

“You sound surprised,” I said. “You were the one who was so certain this would work.”

He laughed. “I might have been putting on a bit of a show. I can’t believe it worked.”

“It did,” I said. “There was some miscommunication, but we worked it out. In fact, we’re going out tonight for our first official date.”

“No, shit?”

“I can’t even describe how excited I am about this date tonight,” I told him.

“I can tell.” He chuckled. “You’ve been hot for Emmy for years.”

“I know. It’s crazy, I’ve been crazy about her for so long but never had the courage to ask her out. But tonight, it’s finally happening. I can’t believe we’re actually taking this step. I really never thought it would happen.”

“She obviously likes you if she agreed to go out with you,” Leo said. “Don’t fuck it up.”

“I don’t plan on it,” I quipped.

“Where are you gonna go?” he asked.

“I already made reservations at the steakhouse,” I said.
