“Damn straight I do.” I grinned. “I plan on taking very good care of this body. I’ve discovered I really like this body of yours. I don’t want it maimed in any way.”

She smiled and leaned against me. “It’s yours to protect and do whatever else you want with.”

“I have a few ideas about what I would like to do to this body that is now under my protection,” I said.

“I’m very open to hearing those ideas.” She grinned.

ChapterTwenty-Two

Emmy

Iwoke up to the sound of Luke making coffee in the kitchen. It had been nearly a month of living together, and I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to wake up next to him every morning. Everything felt so natural and effortless between us, as if we had been living together for years. Again, I was beginning to understand how beneficial it was to be with a man who already knew me so well.

As I walked into the kitchen, he turned and smiled at me, the corners of his eyes crinkling in that way that made my heart skip a beat. He handed me a cup of coffee, and I knew this was where I was meant to be.

“Thank you,” I said.

“I didn’t mean to wake you up. I know you were up late.”

“I didn’t want to miss you leaving for work,” I said.

“What are your plans for the day?” he asked.

“I’m going over to my apartment to get the last few things and turn in my keys,” I said. “Are you sure you’re ready for this?”

“I’ve been ready for a long time. I’ve enjoyed every minute of this last month. If you think I’m crowding you, we have the guestroom.”

I laughed. “And lucky for us, it’s all set up with my bed.”

“But I hope you’ll never sleep in there,” he said.

“Or you,” I countered.

“Exactly. Do you have a busy day?”

“Just the regular stuff. Did you get that other job?” he asked.

“I don’t know. I have some documents at my apartment I need to send over.”

“And your book?”

I laughed. “It’s a work in progress. But I think I got somewhere last night. I felt like I was on a roll. If I get this other gig, I’ll have to shelve it for a bit, but now that I know what I want to write, I have a good direction.”

“Good,” he said. “I’ll bring home dinner. You don’t have to make anything.”

“I don’t mind.” I smile at him.

“I’ll bring dinner,” he insisted. He leaned forward and gave me a kiss. “Have a good day.”

I watched him leave and went to take a shower and get ready for the day. The more time we spent together, the more I realized how much we complemented each other. We had our quirks and differences, but those just made our relationship stronger. We were two puzzle pieces that fit perfectly together, completing each other in every way. Living together had revealed a few more of our little quirks but it was all good. I was really enjoying waking up to mind-blowing sex several days a week.

I found myself falling more in love with him every day. It was like I was seeing him in a whole new light, discovering all the little things that made him who he was. And I loved him for it all, the good and the bad. Living together had been everything that I had hoped for and more. I knew that there would be challenges and bumps in the road, but I was ready to face them all with him by my side.

I grabbed the keys to the apartment I was vacating and headed out the door. I carried the empty boxes upstairs to my apartment. I was half-expecting to find the door kicked in again. To my surprise, my door was locked but my mom was waiting for me.

I sighed. “What?” I asked. “Are you here to demand I go home? Did Dad send you? It’s funny he never shows up to demand I go back home. I’m just waiting for the guy who shows up and kidnaps me, kicking and screaming, to drag me back to my father.”

My mother gave me a sorrowful look. “No, honey, I’m not here to demand anything,” she said. “I just wanted to check up on you. I know things have been tough lately.”
