That was the New Yorker in her. Out here, there were no neighbors to spy through that many windows, but back in the city, that many would have been downright exhibitionist.

Despite its impressive size and modern architecture, the home didn’t look like a scary compound. After spotting the sign, she had expected Canaan to live in a rundown shack with no running water and only a sticky diesel generator.

The house could have been featured in some serious cottage-core magazines.

“See? It ain’t so bad.” Mel hopped down from the SUV and opened her door. “You’re okay, Elizabeth.”

She nodded. “Sure.”

As she continued to stare at the house, the front door opened.

There he stood.

Elizabeth had found him attractive on the video call, but it was nothing compared to the reality that was Canaan Wolverton.

He smiled broadly at her. It slipped for only a second before he recovered as if he were shocked by her appearance in his life.

I get it, Blood Wolf.

Elizabeth was also a little too stunned to speak. She knew Canaan was handsome, but she hadn’t expected his height and the ethereal color of his eyes. They were nearly gold, just like the character he chose to play onFantasy Warriors.

Canaan Wolverton was strikingly gorgeous. His soft brown hair was on the longer side, and his shoulders were so wide she wondered if he would burst out of his white T-shirt if he flexed. Men like this weren’t real. Not in her world, anyway. Maybe in the world of protection agencies and corporate law, all guys looked like they belonged on the silver screen.

She was suddenly very aware of her overly baggy jeans and boxy cardigan. Her long hair was frizzing out of the long braid she’d tied before her biking marathon. She could only hope that she hadn’t sweated so much that she would smell disgusting.

“Elizabeth,” Canaan drawled her name, and her knees shook. “I’m so happy you’re here safely.” He stepped off the front porch steps, and his hand went out to reach for her, but he quickly dropped it, probably sensing she was completely frozen in shock.Who is this man? Why has he brought me here?“Thanks for this, Mel. You want to come in for a bite to eat?”

Mel shook her head. “I wanna get back to the city. I don’t want to share my space with your lizard.”

“I’ll let Myrtle know you say hi.” He chuckled.

Mel shuddered before hopping back into the car and driving away, effectively leaving Elizabeth alone with Canaan in the middle of the woods.

“I probably should have told someone I was going to be here with you.”Not that there is anyone to tell.

Canaan laughed. “You still think I’m gonna murder you?”

“Jury is still out on that one.”

“Is there anything I can do to make you feel better?” he asked, his face as sweet as it was earnest. Real concern creased his brow.

“Not really. Apart from Mel, who knows I’m here?”

“Rylee. She’s going to stop by tomorrow and discuss a few things with you. She’s already been in touch with Evans Electronic Limited Services as your representation.”

She gulped audibly. “Okay.”I sure hope I can afford her fee.“What firm does she work for?”

“Wolverton-Lupine and Associates.”

She blinked. “Your family owns and operates a protection agencyanda law firm?”

“We also have other business ventures. There’s a company or business for every possible taste a Wolverton or a Lupine could have.” There was something hard in his voice as he spoke, as if he didn’t really believe it.

Elizabeth frowned and crossed her arms. “The only people who know I am here are your employee and your sister.”

“Would you like to let your parents know? Just be clear that they can’t share your location with anyone.”

“I can’t reach my mother at this time of year,” she replied tensely. “She’s off on her yearly spiritual retreat, and I’m an only child.”
