He gave her a smile that wasn’t quite pitying, but she was irked by it. “I’ll just have to trust you and hope that my shit radar isn’t completely broken. I haven’t exactly made good choices lately.”

Canaan placed his hand over his heart. “Look, I swear on the questing code of ethics as per and written by the Ji’Una, the Enchantress ofFantasy Warriors, that I will not harm you while you are under my care. I give you hospitality and protection in accordance with the laws of the Blood Wolves.”

Elizabeth grinned. “Did you just really recite theFantasy Warriorsoath to me?”

“I sure did. Feel better?”

“I shouldn’t, but yeah. I do.”

Canaan beamed at her. “Come on, I’ll give you a tour.”

Elizabeth took a final glance at the full moon in the dark night sky. The big white orb was always a good omen for her. As a kid, she thought the moon was a friend. It was a lonely child’s belief, but with the last name of Mooney, it had always fit.

I hope you’re keeping an eye on me, she thought as the white glow hit her face before the compound door closed behind her.

EIGHT

CANAAN

The second he laid eyes on Elizabeth Mooney, Canaan was sure of two things.

First, she was by far the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.

Second, she was his mate.

There was no doubt about it, judging from the way his wolf howled in his mind.

Mine! Holy shit, Elizabeth is my mate! Mate! I’ve found her! Finally!

Canaan audibly gulped as he watched Elizabeth hop out of the car and walk toward the front door. He was being super creepy, watching her from the peephole in his door.

Great way to start, champ.

With more excitement than he knew what to do with, he opened the door. If his wolf had it his way, he would have bounded right down to the car and picked Elizabeth up off the ground to twirl her.

Let’s not freak her out, he reprimanded his beast.

The mate sense, which was nearly impossible to ignore at such a distance, nearly flattened him right there on his front porch. Distance … even a couple of feet … was better while he acclimatized himself to her intoxicating scent.

Her curvy body was hidden under folds of baggy clothes, and her hair was falling out of a long braid in the most fetching way. Canaan longed to pull off the hair tie to run his fingers through the lush locks.

He had to stuff his hands in his pockets as he stood there like an idiot, mentally drooling over his mate. He thought he was helping a friend, but the situation had gotten a whole lot more complicated.

He sent Mel away with as much ease and casualness as he could muster. Mel was gone like a shot the second he reminded her that Myrtle was in the house. He felt bad for the wolf, but he couldn’t wait to get Elizabeth into his house.

“Come on,” he said. “I’ll give you a tour.”

Canaan tried to see his home from her point of view, but he soon realized that it made him look a little unhinged.

As soon as they walked in, she noticed the walls were decorated with artistic prints ofFantasy Warriorsscenes. There were a few sword replicas from the movies that had been blockbuster successes. One shadowbox at the end of the hall even held a full-body armor that had been used in the latest movie.

Right beside it was a framed picture of Canaan with the movie cast because Blood Moon Agency had done the on-set security for the movies as well as personal security for a few of the premieres. Elizabeth took it all in, her eyes opening wider and wider by the second. “I thought I was a fan ofFantasy Warriors, but this is …” She whistled low.

Canaan rubbed a hand across the back of his neck, nervous. He probably should have taken some of the stuff down before her arrival, but how was he supposed to know he was inviting hismateinto his home?

“I know it’s a little bit much, but …”

“Are you kidding me?” she interrupted, turning to face him. “You were at the last movie premiere?” She nearly pressed her nose into the frame to get a closer look. “How lucky are you?” she whispered. “Tell meeverything.”
