“Yup. Two older brothers and Ryland has a twin sister, Rylee. She’s a bigger menace than he is.”

“I guess I’ll meet Rylee soon enough. Are the other siblings also folks I’ll have to meet?”

That could be arranged, his wolf purred.A good family meeting would be just what Elizabeth would need to fall in love with us forever.

Canaan didn’t agree. Elizabeth was a human, and the intensity of a shifter family might scare her away. The last thing she needed was a complication, and a shifter romance was nothingbuta complication.

Elizabeth might be his mate, but there was nothing he could do about it. Not right now, and if she was found guilty of espionage, maybe not ever.

NINE

ELIZABETH

Maybe it was silly, but as soon as Elizabeth saw the interior of Canaan’s house, her anxiety decreased. He wasn’t a stranger; he was a fellowFantasy Warriorfan.

In fact, he was a superfan. One with access to the lucky actors who’d been hired to bring the much-beloved video game to life.

That had to mean he was trustworthy … didn’t it?

Elizabeth thought so, especially after Canaan had gone through the trouble of stating the hospitality vow from the game. It was a nice touch, and he had done it entirely to make her feel at ease.

Canaan Wolverton was a sweetheart.

A very tall, muscular, and handsome sweetheart.

“You must be exhausted. I can show you more of my fanboy stuff later.” He nudged his chin toward two French doors. “This is your bedroom.” He blushed and rushed out. “Or, the bedroom you can use. You know what I mean.” His smile was shy and tentative.

There was something about the big strong man’s shyness that made her knees weak.

Nope. We are not falling for the sexy gamer. We aren’t falling for anyone. Men are off-limits because Jordan ruined love forever for me.

“This is great. Thanks again for this, Canaan. I really don’t know what I would’ve done if it weren’t for you.”

“It’s nothing. There’s a bathroom in there. Feel free to shower or nap. I’ll check on you in a while.”

“Hmm,” she winced. “I actuallywouldlove a shower, but I don’t exactly have anything to change into.”

“Oh. Right. I can lend you some clothes, but they’ll be a bit big on you.”

She pulled at her baggy shirt. “I think I can make it work.”

“You sure can,” he said under his breath as his neck turned red. He quickly turned on his heel to return a few moments later with a pair of joggers and a T-shirt. “It’sFantasy Warriorsstuff.”

She laughed. “Of course it is.”

Elizabeth retreated to the bedroom, but she couldn’t have prepared for the room itself. It was enormous, with six long wide windows that framed a huge four-poster bed. The walls were a soft gray color, while the bedding was a rich burgundy. With the trees sprawling in the distance, it felt like she was in an enchanted forest in her favorite video game.

She was pretty sure Canaan had picked this spot for his home due to its resemblance toFantasy Warriors’landscape. The thought made her smile as she walked into the bathroom.

The white tiles and walls were nearly blinding, but her jaw dropped when she saw the massive bathtub. The thing was so big it could have fit a family of four. And it had jets!

After the longest bike ride of her life, it was just what she wanted.

She filled the tub and sank into it, lathering her long hair with the floral shampoo she found under the sink. Did it belong to an ex? It was definitely possible. Actually, there was very little chance a man like Canaan could be single.

Good. That means I can put this silly crush to rest. Ain’t nobody got time for that, anyway.

After scrubbing the terrible day off of her, Elizabeth slid on the borrowed clothes and towel-dried her hair. She was just about to track down Canaan when there was a soft knock on the door.
