“How could he know where my secret hiding spotwas? It was there when I left. Had I known it would disappear, I would have taken it with me grocery shopping.”

“It’s not like you knew this would happen. I’m guessing someone found the camera in your office, and they did a sweep of your house as a precaution. Maybe they were looking for other cameras or just anything that you could use as proof of innocence.”

“That jerk,” Elizabeth hissed.

The other woman blew out a breath. “He is one sneaky fucker. Rylee know about all this?”

“Of course she does.”

“Good. I like you, Elizabeth. You’re not bad at all.”

“Hmm. Thanks?”

Without saying anything more, Mel left, shouting loudly, “Bye, Canaan.”

“Myrtle sends her love,” came the reply.

Mel slammed the door shut. Elizabeth took her laptop to the computer bay and set it on her desk. After booting it up, she tried to recover all of the working files for the algorithm. “Ah,” she grunted, dropping her head in her hands. “You’d think a techie like me would back all of her shit up on the cloud or on a drive.Something.” She shook her head and groaned again. “But no. I thought I was immune to technological problems.”

“Hmm, Queenie, this isn’t a technological problem. Jordandeletedthe files. Besides, tech people are the worse for backing up their shit. Each of my employees has lost their stuff at least once.”

Elizabeth grumbled under her breath. “Still. Bested by Jordan. He isn’t great with computers. It’s not even his area of expertise. That’s why I was so shocked when Mr. Evans believed Jordan wrote that algorithm. No one should have believed he did it. And this? The files are gone. It’s like part of the hard drive has been wiped clean.”

“May I?” Canaan reached for the laptop.

“Have at it. You’re obviously better at this stuff than I am.”

He chuckled. “I just have more practice and access to more toys.”

She grinned. “Toys, huh?”

Elizabeth watched as Canaan went into the computer’s control panel. He typed in a long string of code, searching for her files by name. When that didn’t work, he sighed. “At the very least, there should be proof that the files existed at one point. You’re right. This looks like only part of the drive was wiped clean.”

“Is that even possible?”

“Well, yeah. It is definitely possible, but do you think Jordan would be capable of that?”

“By himself? No.”

Canaan winced. “Could he have had help?”

“What do you mean?” she shivered. The thought of Jordan working with someone else to destroy her didn’t feel right. It made her skin crawl and her breath catch.

“Is it possible that Jordan gave the laptop to someone?”

“I don’t think so. He would have had to leave the house with it, and that just isn’t possible. I would have noticed …” She paused. “But I didn’t notice he was a mother fucking betrayer, so I could be wrong.”

“Maybe someone gave him a memory key with some kind of program or code on it.”

She sighed and leaned back in her chair. “Who could it have been?”

“You did mention he was engaged soon after your break up.”

She stiffened. “Yeah. And?”

“I hate to put these ideas in your head, but is it at all possible that he was always with this girl, and she was the one who had the code?”

Elizabeth couldn’t breathe or move. She was caught in a flurry of pain and betrayal. “Rylee mentioned something similar.”
