“I’m really sorry, Queenie. We’re not trying to hurt you. We just need to look at this from all angles.”

“I understand,” she whispered, feeling every bit like a fool.

“What’s her name?” Canaan asked. “I’ll run a background check on her and see if she has any tech experience.”

“I don’t know who she is. Her name is Bella, and that’s all I’ve got.”

“It’s okay. It’ll be nothing to find her.”

“Finding her doesn’t help me, though, does it?”

“It could. Rylee did mention that knowing Jordan’s motive could be important. Maybe this isn’t Jordan’s motivation, but his girl’s.”

“Great. Just great.” She pushed away from the desk and stood. “I need some time alone.”

Canaan nodded, his face twisted with concern and, worst of all, pity. She hated that he felt that for her. It made her feel even more pathetic.

She had always believed she was a smart and capable woman, but this was making her doubt everything she thought she knew about herself.

Elizabeth left the house and walked off the back porch into the woods. The tawny wolf could be roaming around, and she did contemplate that it could be dangerous to be out there without any protection. Canaan insisted that the wolf wasn’t dangerous, but what did she know of danger? Nothing, apparently.

She laid down on the grass and turned her face toward the sun. The breeze moved all around her, and the sound of it moving through the leaves was comforting.

She felt like she was spinning out of control, and there was nothing to do but let it happen.

At least she wasn’t alone now.

She had Canaan, his family, and his friends in her corner, and that was more than she ever had before.

FOURTEEN

CANAAN

Canaan watched Elizabeth go, his heart heavy.

It seemed that this situation was infinitely more complicated than he had thought. It didn’t help that it was all wrapped up in Elizabeth’s ex.

It’s making things harder for us. If only we could tell her that she’s our mate and that we would never hurt her like this, she would feel better.

Canaan didn’t agree with his wolf.

He refused to complicate things for Elizabeth, but he did feel the need to do something … anything … to make her feel better.

He could suggest a quest on their favorite game, but they had already done that. He needed to think outside of the box and do something wild.

Wild, fun, and completely out of the ordinary. Something that would totally let Elizabeth forget all about her troubles.

Canaan grinned as an idea formed in his mind. He knew exactly what he could do. Of course, it was one hell of a gamble. Not only would it spill some of Rylee’s secrets, but it would also put Elizabeth right on the path of figuring out that he was a wolf … and that mates were a shifter thing, but really, the chances that Elizabeth guessed Canaan was a wolf shifter were slim to none. Even if he did take her to Kyle’s place.

He continued to try to come up with something else, but he kept coming back to Kyle and their secret project.

Maybe it was selfish and entirely because he wanted Elizabeth to know more about him, but he was sure that she would appreciate it. It would completely blow her mind.

Resolved that he needed to do it for his mate, Canaan called his brother-in-law, grinning like a fool, very much taking a risk.

A couple of hours later,Elizabeth came back into the computer bay. Her cheeks were red, and he knew it wasn’t just because she’d been laying in the sun. Her eyes were red, too … a clear sign that she had been crying.
