Elizabeth had no idea that their relationship was over until just a second ago.

As breakups went, this definitely took the cake.

Jordan had slept over at her place the night before, and they had sex like they always did … with the lights off and only a few mediocre thrusts before Jordan grunted, rolled over, and fell asleep.

Not only did she realize her boyfriend had dumped her, but he had stolen her biggest achievement and passed it off as his.

And now, adding insult to injury, Jordan had found a way to get Mr. Evans on his side.

It was all so devious, all so evil, that Elizabeth left Mr. Evans’s office without a word. She left the building in a haze, and before she knew it, she was back in her house, sitting on the couch, looking at her laptop.

It took a good two hours for the shock to wear off. She booted up her laptop with renewed spirits. Shehadthe proof it was her work. She had saved and logged every single step of her process. She opened the folder on her computer, her heart thumping loudly.

It’s going to be okay.

It wasn’t.

The folder was empty.

She quickly checked the computer’s trash. It was empty too.

Jordan hadn’t just stolen her idea and passed it off as his. He had slept over the night before to remove all evidence that she had been the one to create the algorithm.

“That mother fucker,” she screamed! Hot, fat, angry tears streamed down her face.

It was the worst breakup ever.

CANAAN

SIX MONTHS LATER

Canaan Wolverton ran his hand through his longish hair. He needed a haircut, but he couldn’t be bothered. There was no one to impress in his life, and besides, he barely left his house.

Why should he? He had everything he needed, and what he didn’t have could easily be delivered with only a few clicks on his computer.

Canaan wasn’t exactly a recluse, but his choice to never leave his house did open him up for some ribbing. His two brothers razzed him about it all the time. In fact, Ryland called Canaan’s houseThe Compound. He had even gotten a sign made as a Christmas gift a few years ago.

Now, the sign hung above the gate leading to the house. At first, Canaan put the sign up to prove he didn’t mind Ryland’s teasing, but after a while, it just stuck. The Compound was Canaan’s fortress, and he didn’t mind it one bit. He actually loved the name now.

He was the wolf within the fortress, and at a distance, armed with nothing but his computer, a bunch of gadgets, and a few keystrokes on one of his many computers, he protected Blood Moon Agency’s clients.

If he ran out of beef jerky, cheese puffs, and fruit cups, more could be delivered. He only had to step outside if he wanted a run through the woods. No matter how much grief his mother gave him about family appearances every time she called, there was no reason to keep his hair nice and trimmed. He was a lone wolf and content in his life.

Valerie Wolverton meant well, but she was a wolf, through and through, keeping his mother's style a bit on the savage side.

Canaan grinned as he imagined showing up to the upcoming family reunion with his unkempt hair. Maybe he should grow a beard to really annoy his mother.

“What do you think, Myrtle? Should I cut my hair?” His pet turtle waved before turning her back on him. He chuckled. “I like it a little longer too. Thanks, girl.”

The large clock beside Myrtle’s terrarium read 7:02. His heart beat a little faster as he slid over to his gaming computer and logged ontoFantasy Warriors. It was usually around this time thatshelogged in. Canaan knew it was silly, but he loved doing quest lines with one specific lady.

Queen_Luna.

He had no idea who she was in real life, nor did he know her name. He didn’t even know if she was single. With all of his computer skills, it would take him no time to get all of the information he wanted on her, but that was a level of creepy he wasn’t ready to achieve yet.

Besides, after a few months of doing a quest together almost every night, they were nearly done with their storyline campaign. Canaan was sure Queen_Luna was going to move on and do something else. He would never game with her again, and he had to be okay with that.
