“Safest place to be.” He brushed the back of his fingers against her cheek.

“How long do you think it would have taken to gather the courage?”

“Maybe a few more days. The only thing stopping me was all the razzing I would get from my family.”

Elizabeth laughed softly. “Can’t be a reclusive gamer who meets his girlfriend online. On a video game, no less.”

“Exactly.”

“I don’t know. I think that’s a very sweet way of meeting someone. Innocent, even. Like back in the early days of the internet.”

He chuckled. “Before all those crime shows warned people about catfishing. To be fair, youdidthink I was catfishing you.”

“Only for a second,” she pointed out, giggling.

“I would’ve met you in a really cute spot. Bought you coffee and probably some froufrou pastry before asking you to dinner.”

“Whoa. You might have found me to be a little too much.”

“Impossible.”

“Where would you have taken me for dinner?” she whispered, stepping closer to him.

“A little hole-in-the-wall pizza place,” he replied with a grin.

“All to show off that you remember how I like my pizza.”

His cheeks reddened. “Something like that.”

“It was sweet that you remembered that from one of our many conversations.”

“I remember everything you’ve ever said, Elizabeth.” He paused, casting his eyes down as his cheeks turned a deeper shade of red. “Would it have worked?”

“What do you mean?”

“The pizza thing. Would it have earned me a goodnight kiss?”

Elizabeth’s heart fluttered. Canaan wasn’t just sweet and humble, but his shyness was so endearing that her knees were ready to buckle and throw her right into his arms. “I think so,” she murmured.

Before she could stop herself, she raised up onto her toes and pressed her lips to his. Canaan paused, but only for a second. He was quick to wrap her in his arms. His tongue darted between her lips, taking gentle sweeps of her mouth. Elizabeth locked her arms around his shoulders and moaned into the embrace.

Kissing Canaan was like basking in the full moon. It was like coming alive.

It was everything she wanted. She felt safe and loved. She felt like she was exactly where she was meant to be.

“Elizabeth,” he whispered against her mouth. “I had something to tell you.”

“What was it?” she asked before kissing him again.

“It was important.”

“I bet it was. Go on. Tell me.”

“I forgot.” Canaan picked her up off the floor and closed her bedroom door with a well-placed kick.

The door slammed behind them as Canaan walked them to the bed. He sat on the edge, settling Elizabeth on top of him. Her legs straddled him while her arms were wrapped around his wide shoulders. His mouth didn’t leave hers as he ran his hands up and down her back, sometimes taking a daring squeeze of her ass.

Elizabeth’s heart was beating for one thing and one thing alone.
