With Canaan, Elizabeth was free to be herself. He loved that she could code. He even asked her to help with his secret video game project. He let her into his home, his family, and the escapism of the Fantasy Warriors video game.

And it felt good.

So what if she was only six months single? There was norealtime frame on how long she should grieve for a man who had used her. She was a grown woman with intelligence. She knew her own mind, and by the moon, she knew Canaan was a good man.

Elizabeth knew what she had to do. There was very little good in her life, and she would hang on to what made her happy … and Canaan Wolverton made her happy.

She hopped off the bed, and just as her hand was about to close around the handle, there was a knock. Elizabeth jumped in surprise with a gasp. “Canaan?” she asked, opening the door.

He took a step back as he ran a hand back through his hair. “Sorry. Did I wake you?”

“No, I was just on my way to see you.”

He nodded tensely.

“Is everything okay?” she asked. “You seem a little bit … worried.”

Canaan sighed and, once again, ran a hand through his hair. Elizabeth reached out to steady his hand. “You’ll make yourself bald if you don’t stop. You always do that when you’re stressed, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen you do it twice in two seconds.”

He grinned. “I have a lot to be stressed out about right now.”

“Because of me,” she pointed out.

“Not exactly.”

“You know you’re a bad liar.” She jabbed a finger in his chest.

Canaan flattened her hand against his heart just like he had done the night before. Elizabeth’s mouth went dry, and her breath caught. “I’m sorry,” he mumbled, eyes locked on hers.

“You don’t have to be sorry for being a bad liar. It makes me like you a lot more.”

One of his brows quirked up. “You like me, huh?”

She rolled her eyes. “Don’t get ahead of yourself.”

“Kinda hard not to get all wrapped up in you, Elizabeth.” His voice was rough with lust … need … desire. Elizabeth didn’t know which it was, but she sure felt the pull of attraction drawing her nearer to him. Her hips nearly touched his as she stepped closer. Her body moved of its own accord, and it feltgoodto trust herself again.

This is right. This is exactly where I am meant to be.Her heart gave a big thump in agreement. “I get what you mean,” she whispered, looking into his eyes.

“I don’t want to pressure you. I don’t want you to think I have any expectations, but I do want you to know that I care about you, Elizabeth. More than I know what to do with. I can’t stand it that someone hurt you.”

“You’re helping set it right.”

“It’s not enough,” he grumbled. “And I hate that we had to meet under these circumstances.”

“Oh? And how would you have preferred we met?”

“I would’ve eventually gotten the courage to ask you out for coffee.”

She frowned in confusion. “What do you mean?”

“Well, we were gaming a lot together, and eventually, I would have gotten the balls to ask you out.”

Elizabeth giggled. “You would have asked out a woman you never met?”

“Stranger things have happened,” he shrugged.

“You’re telling me. I’m living with a wolf.”
