“It’s too soon,” he sighed. “And you just made it that much harder.”

Elizabeth closed the door before she could hear anymore. She had some thinking to do, and she couldn’t do that with their fighting ringing in her ears.

Not when Canaan was adamant it was too soon.

Not when she agreed with Rylee.

TWENTY-THREE

CANAAN

For the life of him, Canaan didn’t know how to break through the terrible awkwardness. After Rylee’s comment, Elizabeth went to her bedroom and she’d locked the door.

Or so he imagined.

Elizabeth was probably in there packing her shit, and she would be gone by morning.

She’d asked him to make love to her, but they hadn’t had the chance to talk about it. About what it meant. Rylee and her big mouth had complicated things. Was he supposed to bang down her door and demand they be together?

That wasn’t something a good mate did.

He walked by Elizabeth’s closed door on his way to the computer bay. He nearly knocked. He gingerly booted upFantasy Warriors. He began a quest, but it wasn’t the same without Elizabeth. Canaan wanted to know what she was feeling. He wanted to hold her and comfort her.

He had no expectations.

Of course, that didn’t mean he didn’t have hopes. There were a lot of things he wanted with Elizabeth now that they’d been intimate. “For fuck’s sake, Blood Wolf,” he grumbled to himself, “get your shit together. It’ll all work out.”

It has to,his wolf argued.

“Can we talk?” Elizabeth asked from the door.

He nearly jumped out of his seat. “Yeah,” he croaked. His heart was in his throat, beating way too fast. “Of course. What’s up?”

This is it. She’s telling us she’s leaving.

“I’d like to understand mates a bit more,” she shyly spoke to the floor.

His jaw dropped down. “What?”

“I’m a human. I don’t get all that shifter stuff. Maybe if you explain it to me when you’re not naked, and when I haven’t just witnessed you shape shifting or whatever you call it ….”

“I’ll tell you everything you want to know, Queenie.” He stood, itching to take her in his arms.

She sighed and tugged at her shirt sleeve. “Let’s run a quest.”

“Oh.”

“While we talk,” she added with a grin. “Don’t you think we do our best talking while distracted?”

He returned her grin. “Yeah.” It was how they got to know each other, slowly through months of questing. Maybe this was exactly what they needed. To get back to their roots.

They settled in their usual spots, one right beside the other. Canaan kept on giving her sideway glances, scared that she was going to change her mind and announce she was leaving.

“What do you wanna know, Queenie?”

“I heard you and Rylee,” she said.

“Fuck.”
