Just in case.

He was probably going into full paranoia mode, but as always, he would rather be safe than sorry. With Elizabeth safe in the panic room, he could take his time checking out the electric panel while waiting for Mel’s response.

Canaan closed the house door behind him, and as soon as he took a deep lungful of forest air, he knew something was wrong.

It wasn’t just the scent of pine that tickled his nose.

There were wolf shifters in the vicinity.

Not wolf shifters he recognized either. Their smell was metallic, like a gun’s barrel. His hackles were immediately up, and he slid his phone from his back pocket and typed Kyle another message.

Someone is at my place. Call Ryland. Have him send someone. Mel still isn’t responding.

He didn’t wait for the reply.

Two large wolves came through a narrow path from the woods. Canaan wasted no time. He shifted into his wolf form. He was just barely through the shift when they were on him. Canaan’s tawny wolf was bigger than the others, but the odds were against him.

He had to dispatch one of his foes. Quickly. He went for the jugular. The black wolf tried to stop the attack with his hind legs, but Canaan was fast, and he ripped through the flesh with a snap of his teeth. The wolf fell, but to its credit, it stood back up and tried to keep fighting. Canaan swiped at his head, and the wolf crashed into a dead faint.

The second black wolf tried to claw at Canaan’s paws, but Canaan leapt out of the way. He landed on a big boulder. The vantage point was perfect. He jumped onto the wolf, claws out. The echoing howl tore through the night as the two wolves scuffled for victory.

In the end, Canaan smashed his opponent into the ground, ringing his bell. Canaan scanned his surroundings for signs of another foe. He only spotted Elizabeth holding a kitchen knife as she ran toward him. “There’s another one in the house. I locked him in the panic room.”

“How?” Canaan roared. “Why?”

“I’m Queen_Luna,” she shrugged, “is now really the time for silly questions?”

He threw his hands up and returned his attention to the pinned wolf, who was slowly regaining consciousness. “You work for EELS?” Canaan asked, pressing down on the man’s throat. The answer was unintelligible. Canaan eased the pressure just a bit. “Answer me.”

“Not. Telling.”

“You’ll talk,” Canaan growled. He increased the pressure again. The man sputtered and coughed and, after a few moments, tapped Canaan's foot. “Fine. EELS.”

“They hired you?”

The man nodded.

“Say it. Use your words.”

“EELS hired me.”

“Why?”

The man shook his head. “We just do what we’re paid for. We don’t ask questions.”

“Great business model you’ve got there,” Elizabeth cut in. “What are we going to do with this? We can’t exactly tell the judge that EELS sent mercenaries to attack the house.”

“Sure we can. Rylee already mentioned it in court earlier today.”

Elizabeth blew out a breath. “Right. I forgot about that. The black SUVs. What the hell do they want with me?”

“I don’t know. But I’m thinking it’s got to do with the algorithm.”

“It was good, but it wasn’tthatgood,” she commented. She pointed to the man under Canaan’s feet. “Ease off, or you’ll make him pass out.”

Canaan reluctantly removed his foot. “Call your boss. Now.”

The man shook his head. “It’s my ass if I do that.”
