“Oh, you have no idea,” she replied with her mouth full.

He chuckled. “Lead the way, Queenie.”

She grinned.

Elizabeth loved it when he called her that, but she teased him because she could. “That’s Queen_Luna to you.” Without wasting another second, she started the quest, jumping into the world of fantasy where her life wasn’t falling apart.

FOUR

CANAAN

Canaan was thrilled he had accidentally forgotten to log out ofFantasy Warriors. If he hadn’t, he never would have seen Queen_Luna in the middle of the day.

It was a surprise, but a pleasant one.

Don’t even try to pretend that you don’t stay logged on sometimes, hoping to spot her.

“On your left,” Queen_Luna said, pulling him back to their game. Whoever the woman was, she was a marvel at video games. She easily dispatched three Undead before continuing to the next town, intent on saving its residents from an evil warlock’s army. “Any other Undead want to meet their end? I still have a lot of aggression left to burn,” she grumbled.

Canaan chuckled. “Whoa. That was badass. Not gonna lie, I’m a bit scared of you now.”

The sound of her laugh was sweet and musical. Canaan could’ve kicked himself. Developing a crush on a woman he had never met wasn’t a great idea. It would only solidify his geek persona with his family and pack. He didn’t need any help with that. He was geeky enough as is.

“I’m not scary,” Queen_Luna argued. “I’m just a woman scorned.”

“Scorned, huh? You gonna give me more details?”

She snorted as she destroyed three more Undead. Good thing they had to pass through this particularly hazardous valley inFantasy Warriors.“You don’t want to know.”

“Sure I do,” he argued. “We’re on this quest together. You might as well fill the silence.”

Queen_Luna snorted. “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”

“Ah, come on. We’ve been playing this game together for … what? Six months?”

“Yup. Six months. Right around the time Jor …” Queen_Luna stopped short.

“Keep going, Queenie. You were doing great.”

She dispatched a particularly large Undead before pausing the game. “My ex stole from meandgot me fired. Oh, and did I mention that he also cheated on me?”

Canaan whistled as his heart thumped. She’s single. He shook his head. She had just shared a lot, and the last thing Queen_Luna wanted was for him to drool all over her relationship status. Besides, after a day like that, she was unlikely to welcome the advances of a man she’d never met.

“That …” He blew out a breath. “I don’t even know what to say, Queenie. I’m really sorry that happened to you.”

“Don’t be sorry. I’ll find a way to get back at him. There’s gotta be a special place in hell for people who steal your algorithm.” Without another word, she unpaused the game.

He stilled, and it was only when Queen_Luna saved his werewolf from a particularly nasty wound from an Undead that he noticed he had frozen. “He didwhat?”

“My ex stole my algorithm,” she repeated. “He passed it off as his own work. But that’s not even the best part. Or the worst, I guess. Somehow, I got fired this morning. Apparently, I’ve been doing some corporate espionage, which is utter bullshit. My boss said there was a full-on investigation. He even had the gall to say that I had done it as revenge toward my ex.”

Canaan paused the game. “Whoa, Queenie. Can we take a sec? Did thisjusthappen?” He heard her chewing something as she replied.

“Yup. I left the office and came straight home to battle some Undead. I told you I wanted to kill something.”

“Corporate espionage? Algorithm? Who are you, Queenie?”Because you sure sound like my perfect girl. You play video games and write code. We’re basically perfect for each other.

“I’m no one important. I don’t know why this is happening, but I will deal with it in the morning when I’ve killed enough Undead to feel again. I think this gallon of ice cream might help too.”
