I slam my hands down on the small cocktail table in front of them, causing the liquor to slosh out over the sides of their glasses.

“Wes!” Sloan looks at me in shock, which quickly turns to anger. “What are you doing here?”

“I came here to find you… my girlfriend.” I say the last part with emphasize as I look over to the man still sitting way too close to Sloan.

“We need to talk. You jumped to conclusions today and I refuse to let you make a stupid mistake with this guy before you even hear me out. You are mine Thea… Mine, I won’t let you go this time.” Desperation laced into my stern words.

“Ms. Barton, it sounds like you need to handle some personal business before we continue.”

Ms. Barton?

Fuck. You know what they say about assuming…

“Can you give me five minutes, Mr. Layne? We have had a day full of misunderstanding and I am sorry you were privy to this. But I truly want to discuss the finalization process, so if you wouldn’t mind giving me just a moment, please?”

Shit, this was for sure a business meeting. “I’m sorry I jumped to conclusions. I only knew of a female… Kelly, who she was working with on this.”

“Yes, Kelly is my partner.” He looks at me with amusement. “I’m Dalton Layne… and I like your tenacity. I’ll give you both a few minutes.” Dalton says before he stands and heads toward the bar.

Sloan lays into me as soon as he is out of earshot. “Wes, what the hell? You could have just ruined that deal. He was offering to stay on as small percentage investor, which could be huge for me.”

I move to sit by her, grabbing her hand. “Shit babe… I’m sorry. But what was I supposed to think? You haven’t returned my calls all day. No one knew where you were and then Danni called and said she saw you here with another guy.” Regretting bringing that up as soon as the words come out of my mouth.

“Danni… are you for-fucking-real, Wesley? Why the hell is she still calling you?”

“I didn’t answer, but then she sent me a text. I was worried because Quinn told me what you saw this morning and I just… I need you to let me explain. Nothing happened. I would never do that to you, Lo.” I speak quickly, trying to get all my words out.

“I know.” She says back calmly, rubbing my hand that’s still holding hers.

“You do?”

She nods her head.

“Well, then why the hell haven’t you answered me all day? I thought I lost you again.”

“I ended up going to Maddie’s, and we had a long-overdue talk. She explained how everything went down last night, but then I lost track of time and had to rush here for this meeting.”

The one person I didn’t think to ask about Sloan's whereabouts because I know they aren’t as close as they used to be.

Sloan continues, “I didn’t want to believe what I was seeing but the t-shirt, the look on her face, you not calling me…”

“I did call you.” I interrupt, wanting to defend my case because even in my drunken state, she was constantly on my mind.

“It must have been when I was on the plane. I took a red eye and turned off my phone to sleep.”

“Shit. Why are the odds always stacked against us?” Our timing is the fucking worst.

“Nothing good in life comes easy.” Sloan says, her voice softening.

“Okay, Xander King.”

“What?” She looks at me with confusion as to why I’m calling her my father’s name.

“That’s just something by dad said to me once in regard to you.”

She smiles her vibrant smile at me.

“So, you aren’t mad at me?”
