The crowd erupts, raising their glasses high as the beginnings of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” starts blaring through the speakers. Roger settles beside me, his arm thrown over my shoulder as the first lyric hits. Right on cue, the entire bar starts belting out the song. Gazing around the room, I take it all in. The smiles, the cheers… it’s fucking incredible. I wish Quinn was here with us. She would love this just as much as I do.

I’m mindlessly playing with my chain, when I hear a sultry purr in my ear. “Hey, Eli. Long time, no see.”

When I turn to face the voice, I'm inches away from her lips. Damn, she's standing close.

“Hey, Luce, how’ve you been?” Taking a step back as I speak, I know not to get too much closer to her. The guys on the team warned me about her and several of her friends. They’re the type of chicks who just want the status of sleeping with a player. My boy Hunter said one of them begged him to fuck her raw… screaming about him leaving his seed behind. Fuck that. I try to stay as far away from that nonsense as possible.

“A couple of friends and I were wondering if you and some of the guys want to go somewhere a little less noisy,” Lucy says, her eyes wandering over the crowd surrounding us.

“No thanks. My boys are in town visiting.”

“Oh, they can certainly come too,” she croons, dragging her pointed nails over my chest. The action causes a shiver to run through me, and not in a good way.

“Sorry, doll, maybe some other time.”

With a roll of her eyes, she turns and walks away, settling up to one of our newest players. Poor bastard, hope he wraps it up.

After several minutes, Wes and Parker rejoin me at a high-top table. “Fuck, man, is it like this all the time? I’ve been mistaken for a player and asked for a quick fuck at least five different times…” Parker says, shaking his head.

“Don’t do it!” Wes and I both respond. Wes has an idea of the life I live. His modeling career is taking off, with him being the new face of Calvin Klein. This means women basically throw their panties at him, maybe even some guys.

It’s easy to get wrapped up in the chaos that comes with fame. The parties, the booze, the women… it's all readily available, whenever you want it. I’ll occasionally join the guys for a beer and go to team functions, but I stay away from the party scene. I’ve worked too hard to get to where I am just to throw it all away.

Me

Wish you were here.

Queenie

Me too!

Hours later,we’re stumbling out of a New York-style pizza place in downtown Charlotte. It’s my favorite spot to grab a slice in the city.

“You know, man, this was great… I had a great night…” Parker says in a happy drunken state. It’s definitely a nice change from his normal grumpy ass persona. A string of hiccups soon follows, and Wes and I turn to see Parker propped up against a building.

“All right, buddy, Wes is getting an Uber,” I say, walking over to help him stand up straight without the support of the wall.

“Hey, man, I forgot to ask you… Why isn’t Quinn here? Figured of all things, she’d be here for this.” Hiccup.

“She couldn’t make it… but I honestly think she didn’t want to intrude on boys’ weekend.”

“Psssh,” Wes grumbles as he sways alongside Parker. I side-eye him, but his focus is on his phone and not our conversation.

The Uber pulls up, and I look over at Wes in question.

“What the fuck is that?” Parker barks out in laughter.

“Fuck if I know.” I join him in laughing.

“Ughh, I didn’t pick the XL. It would’ve been twenty more minutes, so I picked a regular. I didn’t think it was going to be this bad.”

All three of us stare dumbfounded at the neon green Ford Fiesta, debating on if we will all be able to fit. The driver rolls down the window with a smile on his face.

“Are all three of you guys really trying to get in here?”

“See, even he doesn’t think we’ll fit.” Parker laughs.

“Challenge accepted, my man,” I say as I open the back door.
