“I’m going to get closer and fire a warning shot to see if they’ll take off.”

“We’re going with you,” Avery announced and slid out of the vehicle.

Avery and the other members got ready as Sonny signaled to move closer. Avery followed by his side, her adrenaline pumping hard and fast. They hid behind trees and nearby bushes that lined the area. Avery peered above the brush and could clearly make out the figures of the men on the other side of their metal gate, all of them armed. At least ten of them. Fuck, this was going to be worse than she initially thought.

Sonny held up a hand and everyone stopped moving. He aimed his rifle, poised, ready. Then he pulled the trigger.

The sharp sound of the bullet hitting the ground near the gate reverberated in the cold morning air. No one cried out, but the sudden chatter in the distance grew louder. Avery looked up again and could see several men with DR cuts moving closer to the gate, crouching down low on the ground.

Looking down the barrel of a rifle was a hell of a morning wake up call.

Another shot rang out and it whizzed past Sonny, hitting the ground near him. Avery’s heart nearly stopped. That shot was far too close for comfort.

And this whole situation was fucking crazy. She knew that neither side would give up, but someone would eventually lose.

Avery knew how to get rid of these assholes quick and without causing bloodshed. Should she let the others know or just do it?

She withdrew her phone and dialled 911. As quietly as she could, she gave a reason for the call and an address and hung up.

There was nothing MCs hated more than cops. The DR boys would pick up and leave as soon as they heard those fucking sirens. Avery knew that as well as she knew every inch of the land around her.

Sonny fired again, but this time, he hit his mark. One of the Death Riders cried out and gripped his left shoulder, falling to his knees. The guy standing next to him helped him get up and they ran out of sight.

So maybe bloodshed couldn’t be entirely avoided but it could be stopped before it got out of hand.

Thirty seconds later, Avery heard the faint wail of sirens in the distance and the relief was palpable. Sure enough, the Death Riders on the other side of the gate scurried off like the cockroaches they were. The rumble of bikes taking off had Avery breathing a huge sigh of relief. It didn’t mean that the feud was over but at least it bought them time.

“The fuck did you do, Avery?” Sonny yelled as he walked over.

The thunderous expression in his blue eyes had her blood pumping and it had nothing to do with fear.

“I did the smart thing, I bought us time. Death Riders are gone, and they won’t be back, not for a good while. You should be thanking me!” she yelled right back.

“By calling the fucking cops? I should thank you for that?” Sonny growled as he pointed a finger at her. “You know what kind of trouble you’ve just invited? Or have you forgotten who we’ve got asguests?”

“I gave the address of the abandoned farm three miles down the road. They’re not coming here.”

Sonny glared at her one last time, turned, and told everyone to go back to the clubhouse. Then it was just the two of them, alone in the field.

The sirens grew louder, and Avery spotted the red and blue lights as they flashed. The cop cars drove past the property at a racing clip and kept on going.

“What did I tell you?” Avery replied smugly as the air around them grew quiet once again. She hopped back on the ATV and smiled at Sonny.

“That was a dangerous thing to do,” Sonny muttered as he slid in beside her. “Don’t ever make a decision like that without telling me first.”

“You’re not my boss out here, Sonny.”

“I’m the lead enforcer. When we’re in a situation like this, I’m in charge. Got it?”

Avery turned to face him, the tension in the air snapping like a live wire. For the first time, she looked at him – really looked into his eyes. She saw anger there for sure but also fear. Was he worried about her safety?

“Goddamn, know-it-all woman.”

Then he had to open his mouth again and insult her. Any thoughts of making inroads with Sonny vanished.

Maybe they were destined to always play this ridiculous game with each other.

“Oh, shut up Sonny. You’re just pissed ‘cause I solved the problem. And you didn’t get to kill anyone.”
