“Including laying down your life?” Avery asked.

“I’m not saying any more. Do what you want… I’m… done.” Tyra sighed and squeezed her eyes shut, more tears streaking down her face.

Sonny re-entered the room and motioned for Avery.

Avery made her way over to the door. “What’s up?”

“We need to leave Tyra. We got bigger problems.”

“Like what?”

“Wyatt was shot. Not long after I left the range. He’s at the hospital, in surgery.”

“Oh my God! I’ll get Vanier to watch over Tyra until we get back,” Avery whispered as she pulled out her phone and began to text with shaky hands.

“We? Who said you’re coming with me to the hospital?”

“He’s my family too, Sonny. I started this mess at the bar with Galen. What if Wyatt… Oh God, what if he doesn’t make it? It’s my partly my fault,” Avery murmured, her eyes welling up.

Sonny gripped her shoulders, and she fought back her tears.

“Listen to me, the bar was just him fucking with us. Galen already had a plan in motion, so this isn’t your fault or something you need to make up for. Did Tyra say anything else?”

Avery shook her head. “She said she doesn’t know anything else. She’s done. And I believe her. She’s so in love with Galen, she’s willing to die for him.”

Sonny scoffed. “Stupid. Love is for suckers.”

“You got that right.”

SONNY

Sonny was silent as he, Avery, Xander, and Dante headed out to the hospital in their SUV.

The sun was just starting to set and bathed everything around them in a pink haze. As they pulled out onto the highway, the natural scenery of rocky canyons and barren fields should have been soothing to him. He felt quite the opposite though, like a violent storm about to erupt.

Rage was the first emotion he recognized and could deal with. Anger at the Death Riders. Sonny was going to make whoever shot Wyatt pay. But in his usual, methodical way, not like a hot-tempered lunatic. Even though his patience was sorely tested.

Besides the anger, there was anxiety. That was a new one.

Sonny was worried about Wyatt. But he had a feeling his brother was going to be okay. Strange as it seemed, Sonny always had a sixth sense about these things. If Wyatt was gone, Sonny reckoned he’d know.

Sonny was also concerned about Avery.

She’d hardly said two words since they left the compound and that wasn’t like her at all. The woman could barely go a minute without talking about something or other. Her stillness was odd, like the light that always lit up inside her was suddenly snuffed out. It reminded him of when Avery was sixteen and had been kidnapped by a rival crew. Sonny had been twenty-one at the time, still a new member two years in. Gage had found Avery a few hours later but for a while there, everyone, including Sonny, was scared out of their minds for her.

Looking at her now, her beautiful face so devoid of emotion, it made his chest tighten again. Sonny was starting to wonder if he was the one who needed to go see a doctor.

He drove fast but not crazy. After all, they couldn’t risk catching the eye of patrol cops. Twenty-minutes later, they reached the regional hospital in Drumheller. Longford was too small a town to have a hospital of their own. Normally the club did everything they could to avoid hospital visits or anything to do with public facing places but sometimes you couldn’t avoid it. A concussion was one thing, gunshot wounds another.

They’d all removed their cuts, so as not to draw the wrong kind of attention. Not that three large men with copious tattoos, scars, and sullen expressions didn’t warrant a glance or two in a busy hospital.

Then there was Avery.

She looked like an angel compared to his brothers. Then again, Sonny knew that wasn’t the case. She may be city-smart, but she could also be as deadly as the rest of them. Like an angel in disguise, the devil who worked in mysterious and beautiful ways. Yes, she was the devil alright. Sonny was tempted by her and realized he would do just about anything to have her.

Hell, he felt fucking proud walking by her side as they entered the hospital and what was up with that?
