“No, actually,” I said. “I had one glass of wine.”

“That’s odd,” said the doctor. “Ever get dizzy spells?”

I thought about it. I had been dizzy last night. But anyone would be after the incredible sex that Alex and I shared on the roof.

“Well, I can give you something for the nausea, if you like.”

“I’ll be okay,” I said. “Thanks for coming up.”

After that, I got up, despite Krista’s arguing, and made my way downstairs for the press shoot. When I got there, Alex and a couple of the other executives were standing together. Mark was suspiciously absent: I wondered if Alex had made good on his threat to fire him, but later I learned that he’d just decided to fly back early. But I was surprised when I learned that most of the rest of Alex’s company would be staying for a few more days, as some presentations and team-building took place around the hotel.

I expected Alex to rebuff me after I’d left so suddenly last night, but he looked happy to see me. He even smiled, which was a rare sight when there wasn’t a camera in front of me. “Thanks for making it,” he murmured to me when I got there.

“That’s okay,” I said. “Wouldn’t want to be neglecting my professional duties, would I?”

“Well, your professional duties are almost over,” he replied. “But I’m hoping you might stick around for another day,” he added, flirtatiously. My heart rate rocketed in response to his deep, warm voice.

“Sure,” I said, almost breathless.

“Why don’t you come down to the dock this afternoon? Say, about 1 p.m.?” said Alex. “We can go for a sail if you like.”

“That sounds fun,” I said. “But, Alex …”

“I promise,” he said, interrupting me. “You’ll have a great time.”

I didn’t doubt him for a second.

“All right,” I said.

Chapter Fourteen

Alex

Iwaitedpatientlyatthe dock. The sun was high in the sky now—it was just after midday, and I turned and looked out at the blue waves.

Of course, when I’d told Lena we were going sailing, I hadn’t been entirely honest. It was true that we were taking a ride on a boat. But I’d spent enough time on bumpy schooners to know that there was only one way to travel in style.

And besides, there was a special place I wanted to show Lena.

When I saw her get out of a cab at the jetty, in a white summer dress and a sensible pair of flat shoes, I was floored. Lena never failed to amaze me with how beautiful she was, and how good she looked in everything she wore.

“Well, hi there,” I said. As Lena approached, I didn’t know what to do. Hug, kiss, or shake hands? In the end, I gently hugged her, my hands clasped across the soft skin of her back, and I felt myself growing a little hard for her. But I put aside my animal instincts and took her hand.

“Come on,” I said, and we walked down the jetty, past the sailboats and cutters and catamarans which crowded the dock.

“Aren’t we going in one of these?” said Lena.

“Nope,” I replied, proudly.

“But you said we were going sailing.”

“Well, that wasn’t a hundred percent true.”

I pointed out into the bay, at the enormous white craft that was slowly coming into the harbor.

“It’s more like a yacht than a boat,” I grinned.

Lena’s mouth opened with shock, and she covered it with her hands as we watched the enormous, beautiful yacht come in. TheKauai Clipperwas my personal yacht. I’d bought it years ago but rarely had the chance to ride it anywhere.
