“That’s very nice,” I said, preparing myself for whatever mean thing he was about to follow that up with.

But there wasn’t one. “Well, have a good night,” said Alex. “Give me the keycard and then we can get out of here.”

I reached into my pocket to get it for him and realized it wasn’t there.

I took my hand out and reached into the opposite pocket.

Then, I checked in the slim pocket that had been sown into my skirt.

“I …” I said.

“What?” growled Alex.

“I’ve left it downstairs.”

“Well, where’s yours?”

“I mean … Karen didn’t give it to me. She said she needed hers this weekend.”

“What?”

I must have tossed the keycard into my handbag, along with my cell phone! How could I have been so dumb? Karen was already leaving as I came back up.

“Call Karen,” I said.

He rolled his eyes and sighed, and I felt about an inch tall while I watched him dial her number, shaking his head. “How did you manage to leave it?” he said.

“I put it in my car by mistake,” I said.

“What were you doing in your car?”

“Calling a friend.”

“Typical,” he muttered. “She’s not picking up. Probably halfway home by now.”

“Oh no,” I said.

“Calm down. I’ll just call Steve. He’s probably still in the building.”

“The janitor? Karen sent him home at six. She said the catering people would be here tomorrow to clean up from the buffet, and they have a key card for the suite.”

“Oh, you’re kidding me,” said Alex.

My face reddened.

“What are we gonna do?”

We were stranded in the apartment. And every other employee had already left the building.

“Look,” said Alex. “I’ll call Charlie. He’s my pilot.”

“Your pilot?” I said.

“Yeah. And driver. When I travel by car. He can come and get the key card out of your car and come up here.”

Alex called the number. It rang once, then twice.

Then, the phone went dead. I watched the screen turn black.
