“Is there a charger somewhere in here?” said Alex.

“No,” I said. “I told you, I don’t have one.”

“That’s interesting,” said Alex.

“Why?”

“Because we’re stuck,” he said and fixed me with a look that told me we could be here for a while.

“Thisisperfect,”saidAlex, while we sat together on the sofa in utter amazement at what had just transpired. “Just. Perfect.”

“Will you stop?” I said. “It’s not my fault I listened to Karen. She’s the one who’s supposed to be here.”

“Oh, don’t give me excuses! You should have known. What made you think we were going to leave at the same time anyway?”

I felt awful. I wanted to cry. After all the hard work I’d put in to make Alex think I was a good employee, now I’d made such a terrible mistake that, if our luck didn’t turn, we’d end up stuck here all night.

“Look, don’t worry about it. It’s not your fault,” said Alex.

I turned and looked at Alex.

“What do you mean?” I said.

“Look, it’ll be okay, all right? Charlie will see he’s got a missed call.”

“So, the call may not have gone through. It only rang two times.”

Alex sighed. “Just trying to be optimistic is all.”

“Why don’t we pull a fire alarm?” I asked. “We can get out through the exit system.”

“It’s not on right now,” replied Alex. “It’ll operate twenty-four hours around the clock once we are in full operation. This was an advance viewing for special clients and so, we had it turned on between 4 and 7 p.m. only for tonight’s event.”

“Oh my God,” I said. We were stuck. And the worst part was, Alex wasn’t angry. He was finding the whole thingfunny.

“Don’t laugh!” I said.

“It is kind of funny.”

“No, Alex,” I said. “It really isn’t. For one, I can’t exactly come to work on Monday now, can I? Not after this.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Face it. We don’t get along. And this catastrophe—I mean, you’re being nice about it and all. I can’t come back from this.”

“It isn’t such a big deal,” said Alex. “And besides, what was I going to do tonight? I was going to fly back across the island and work all weekend. Heck, at this rate, I might even get enough sleep for a healthy adult male.”

I smirked. Alex looked just about as healthy as they came, all muscle and veins popping out on his skin, without an ounce of fat on him.

“Besides, I don’t regret having you here,” said Alex. “Heck, I think you sold the MacPhersons on this. And Alex Paani.”

“I did?” I said. The MacPhersons were an old couple with plenty of financial interests in the city. And Alex Paani invested in condos and properties all across the island.

“There was another reason it was good to have you here,” said Alex.

“What’s that?” I said.

“It helps to make a sale if you have a beautiful woman standing by your side doing most of the talking,” he said.
