I snort when he loads more food on top of me. Brushing it to the side, it all tumbles to my side. “Not about the mountain. News about me.”

His face scrunches as I can only believe he’s trying to figure out what I’m going to say before I get the words out.

Nothing he guesses is going to be close, I’m positive about that.

“You’ve decided to join the rescue team so we can spend even more time together?”

I bark a laugh at that. Seeing how winded I’ve become after a hike, I’m thinking that’s a pretty terrible idea.

“You wish,” I scoff before shaking my head. “Though, I do think we’re going to be spending more time together.”

His brows come together and it’s like I can see the gears in his head working overtime. To give him a little hint, I tap my stomach. That’s all it takes for his expression to drop, leaving nothing but a blank slate.

I think I broke him.

“You’re pregnant?”

Okay, not completely.

“By a few months, yeah. Wanted to wait until I found out the gender before I told you.” Biting my lip, I turn to look back up at the clear sky.

Our poor bags of chips get crushed when he moves toward me, kneeling at my side.

“You’re pregnant,” he breathes out, shock lacing his words. Reaching out, he hesitates before touching my stomach.

With his gentle touch and shocked tone, I feel the emotions swell in my chest. “Sure am. You’re going to be a father, Bryson. Going to have to get the role down because we’re gonna have a little girl here in a few months.”

He’s smiling again, wasting no time leaning down to kiss me momentarily. Then he’s frowning, scowling more at himself.

“I made you walk up here to tell me that.” His brows furrow, “I’m an asshole.”

I don’t mean to giggle, not when he’s beating himself up. “You didn’t know.”

“Is this why you’ve been having so many outings with those other women?” he asks, thinking about the past. “All of those foot massages…”

“Doctor’s appointments and swollen ankles.” Curling my toes, I look down at my poor feet. “I’m definitely going to ask you to carry me back down the mountain, you know?”

He wouldn’t even break a sweat either.

Now he’s trailing his fingers from my stomach to my hips. Giving me a squeeze, his smile returns as quickly as it disappeared.

“You could ask me for anything right now and I’d give it to you,” he promises. What dangerous words.

“Well, if that offer is on the table…” I push away all the wrapped food, making enough room for me to sprawl out. Without a lick of shame, my smile grows. “I’m open for more touching.”

Bryson chuckles as he slides his hand back up my front. “We both know what that will lead up to.”

“That’s what I’m counting on. No one is out here to see us but the birds and the squirrels.” Hopefully nothing worse.

We have all day to eat our packed lunch. It can be our dinner for all I care. I just wanthim, the man who is my other half.

When he leans down to brush his mouth against mine, I know I’ll get exactly what I want too.
