Marcus: Studying. Always studying.

Me: How about you take a break?

I don’t have to wait long for his reply.

Marcus: What did you have in mind?

Me: There is this one bar I wanted to check out.

Me: Pick me up in thirty?

CHAPTERTHIRTY-EIGHT

PRESCOTT

I look at the message only to find one word written underneath.Seen.That’s it. Just seen. No reply. No call. Nothing.

Maybe Jade fell asleep?

I didn’t see another reason why she wouldn’t answer. Jade isn’t one of those girls who likes to play games. If she has an issue, she damn well makes sure everybody knows it.

“Damn, I think I overdid it.”

Locking my phone, I let it drop into my bag before turning to face my best friend.

“Or maybe you’re just getting old.”

“Shut up. I’m in the best shape of my life.”

“Mhmm… so you keep saying.”

Nixon chuckles, “You’re such an asshole, Wentworth.”

“Yeah, well… I’m going to grab a shower.”

“Hey, I wanted to thank you.”

“For what?” I pull my brows together, not knowing where he’s going with this.

“For giving Jade a break. I know she’s a lot to deal with sometimes, but she’s not a bad person.”

My stomach clenches at his words, the guilt slamming into me. Me giving Jade a break had nothing to do with him and all to do with her. And the fact that we’ve been hooking up for weeks now. Although, was it just hooking up? What started off just as sex turned into something more. I don’t remember the last time Jade threw me out of her bed, and when we slept together, I could actually fall asleep. Most nights having her with me kept the nightmares at bay.

“I know that,” I say lamely, rubbing the back of my head.

I need to get out of here before I do something stupid. Like, tell him exactly what’s been going on. If he were ever to find out, I’d be a dead man. And I can’t even blame him.

You don’t mess with your best friend’s little sister, even if she wants you to. And you especially don’t do it behind his back.

My feet pound against the ground as I turn the corner. I check the stats on my watch, speeding up—one more block. I have one more block left. I try to keep breathing deeply as I push my body to its limits. I can feel that familiar ache in my knee, but I don’t let it slow me down.

One more block.

I chant those words as the familiar buildings come into view. I look up, my eyes going straight to Jade’s window, but the damn light is off, and the window closed like it was when I left my apartment earlier this evening.

Where the hell is she?
