I texted her when I got home once again, but I haven’t heard anything from her.

Coming to a stop in front of my building, I lean forward and press my palms against my knees, trying to get my breathing under control.

Maybe she went out with the girls? But still, she would have gotten back to me by now. She always got back to me.

The sound of an engine has me straightening. Bright lights blind me as the car comes closer. I raise my hand to shield my gaze and find a black Honda pulling up in front of the building. The driver turns off the car and steps out. “Prescott?”

I move closer, narrowing my eyes. “Marcus?” I vaguely remember the tall guy from around campus since we have some classes in the same building, and I’m pretty sure I saw him hang out with Jade a time or two. “What’s going on? What are you doing here?”

It was almost close to midnight, and Jade wasn’t home. Maybe he was coming to meet somebody else?

“I…” His throat bobs as he swallows, and for the first time, I notice that his face is completely pale. “I need your help.”

The hairs on my body stand to attention.Help? Help with what exactly?“I… sure.”

“I swear, I don’t know what happened.” Marcus runs his hand through his hair as he walks around the car and opens the passenger door. He shakes his head, his voice faster with every word he says until it’s all just a blur. “One moment she was with me, and the next…”

I step closer, my heart slows down, and I suck in a breath, bracing myself as I look inside the car.

Somebody is lying on the passenger seat, and it takes me a moment to recognize the person.

“Jade?” My heart starts beating faster as rage courses through me.

Hot, boiling rage.

I shove Marcus out of my way as I bend down so I can get a better look at her.

“Doll?” My fingers tremble as I reach for her, unsure of where to even touch her to not hurt her, but at the same time, knowing that I can’tnottouch her.

She’s lying on the seat, almost like she’s sleeping, if there wasn’t blood covering her face. So much fucking blood. Her eyes are closed, one dark, angry bruise coloring her eyelid.

“What the hell happened?” I yell at Marcus, my eyes still taking her in. Still assessing. “Who did this to you?”

Who do I have to kill?

Ripped clothes.

Busted lip.

Blood.

Scratches.

More fucking blood.

Why is there so much blood?

“Apparently, the bar she wanted to visit has pit fights. And she applied. She won against two chicks before one beat her.”

Pit fight? She was in a fucking pit fight?

“Why didn’t you take her to the hospital?”

I lean closer, pressing my fingers to the side of her neck and let out a shaky breath when I feel the steady thrum of her heartbeat.

“She didn’t—”

“N-no… h-hospital,” Jade groans, her fingers wrapping around mine. She tries to blink her eyes open but only manages to squint through one.
