“But you wanna hear the even crazier part?” I asked her, laughing slightly.

“Girl, what?”

“He found out that when he was dating her, she was hooking up with their English teacher and that it was the English teacher that told her to dump him.”

“Shut the front door. What?”

“I know.” I laughed. “This is why I was so tired this morning. All these men and their drama.”

“Girl, his ex-gf cheated on him and he still wants her back.” She rolled her eyes. “And men like to call us women psycho.”

“Right?” I sighed. “I just don’t know that I’m going to meet any good guys on this app.”

“Don’t give up hope, girl. You haven’t been on the app long, right?”

“No.” I shook my head. “But I need to meet someone to bring to the office party on Friday.”

“Why?” She looked confused.

“I kinda told Max Whitlock I had a bf.” I sighed. “He accused me of trying to flirt with Travis, and I got upset, so I said there was no way, and well, I don’t actually have a boyfriend, so I need to find someone to bring with me.”

“Oh, Polly.” She giggled. “That sounds like the sort of drama I would get myself into.” She shook her head. “I get it, though. I did sense that there was something off between you and Max.”

“Oh, really?”

“Yeah. A weird tension. I was wondering. He seems like he’s hardcore.”

“I know. I can’t stand him.”

“Yeah, I much prefer Travis,” she said. “Okay, then we need to get you swiping, girl. You need to meet a great guy by this Friday. Also, if I was you, just go for the guy that looks the hottest.” She laughed. “That’ll show Max.”

“True.” I grinned and then groaned when I saw an email come through from the law firm’s HR department. “Ugh, I have to go to HR when we get back. They want to see me.” My stomach sank as I stared at the screen. What had gone wrong now?

Chapter14

The HR office was empty when I walked inside, and I made my way to one of the leather seats and sat down. I had no idea why HR had called me in, unless Max had complained about me. Or maybe someone else had. Though I had no idea what anyone else would have had to complain about. There was a radio playing Top 40 music in the room, and I listened to Taylor Swift singing for about three minutes and then an ad about teeth whitening. Boring. I grabbed my phone and checked my text messages. Chelsea had texted asking if I wanted to grab a drink that evening, and I quickly text her back and said yes. I was always down for a drink. I was about to open the dating app when the door opened, and I quickly shoved my phone back into my handbag.

“Good afternoon, Ms. Campbell.” Max’s deep voice boomed into the room, and I could feel my back stiffening as I looked over at him. Why was he always everywhere? And why did he have a smirk on his face?

“It was,” I said, giving him a look, and I frowned as he laughed.

“Please come with me,” he said as he stopped in front of me.

“What? Why?” I stood up and folded my arms. “I’m not going back to the file room.”

“Are you really trying to tell me, your boss, where you will and won’t go and what work you will do?”

“I’m just saying.” I shrugged, my chest heaving as I glanced at his pink lips.

“We’re going to my office,” he said as he made his way back to the door. “Come on.”

“Why are we going to your office?” I asked him suspiciously. If he made any comment about me getting on my knees, I was going to punch him in the groin.

“You’re going to be doing some work for me.”

“What?” My heart stopped. “Why?”

“Tracy doesn’t think you’re a good fit for her team.” Max opened the door for me. “And my assistant is out for the next couple of weeks on vacation, so you will be assisting me in my work.”
