“What if I don’t want to?”

“Then you can walk out the door.” He looked down at me, an almost sinister look in his eyes as he glanced at me. “You either work for me or you find another job.”

“You suck.” I poked him in the chest. “What is this power trip you’re on?”

“I don’t suck anything but nipples,” he said in a low voice and then paused. “Well, I suppose there are other things I suck.” He looked down, and I wasn’t sure where he was looking. Was he looking at my pussy or my feet? Was this his way of telling me that he had a foot fetish? I didn’t want to know. Well, I did want to know, but I wasn’t going to let him know that.

“I’m sure Boobie likes that,” I said under my breath, and his eyes narrowed. I waited for him to deny it, but he didn’t say anything.

“Come on, let’s go. I have a call in five minutes.” He headed toward the elevator and pressed the button to go up. The doors opened immediately, and he stepped in. I hurried in after him and watched as he pressed the button for the tenth floor. The highest level of the building. I stood on the opposite side of the elevator and hoped that this one wouldn’t break down. I waited for him to say something, but he didn’t. We stood there in awkward silence until the door beeped and opened on the tenth floor. Max walked out ahead of me, rude, and made his way down a marble hallway to a door on the right. My jaw dropped as we walked into a room that was at least seven hundred square feet. His office was humungous. He walked toward a dark wood desk on the far right of the room and pulled out his black leather chair and took a seat.

“Sit,” he commanded pointing to the chair on the other side of the table. I sat in the chair and waited to see what he was going to say or do next. He pressed some buttons on the phone on his desk and picked up a black pen and yellow legal pad. “I want you to take notes,” he said, looking at me.

“What sort of notes?”

“The items you think are most important in the call.”

“Uhm, okay,” I said, biting down on my lower lip. How the hell was I supposed to know what the most important items in the call were? I felt like he was setting me up for failure, but I wasn’t going to say anything. I grabbed a pen off of his desk and then looked at his legal pad. “Can I have some paper, please?”

“You should have been prepared when you entered the office,” he chastised me as he handed me the pad and opened a drawer. My jaw dropped at his comment. I knew he was trying to goad me, and I wasn’t going to take the bait.

“Yes, sir. It won’t happen again, sir.” I clicked the pen on, and I could see he was about to say something when a voice came through the speaker on the phone.

“Max, I see you’re on the call already?” An older man’s voice filled the room. “It’s me, Henry.”

“Henry, good to hear your voice. How was Hawaii?”

“Amazing. The wife loved Maui. Think we might buy a condo down there.”

“Sounds like a plan.” Max sounded cheerful. “Any other news?”

“My daughter, Jackie, got engaged. The wedding is next year.”

“You sound happy.”

“Let her husband pay for her clothes now.” Henry laughed. “What about you? Seeing anyone?”

My ears perked up at the question, and I looked over at Max.

“No one special.” His eyes looked over at me, and he smirked.

“Still playing the field, I see.”

“Or maybe the field is playing me,” Max said, and Henry laughed. I rolled my eyes. What did that even mean? “Henry, I have my new assistant Polly Campbell on the call with me today. She’ll be taking notes.”

“Great. Hello, Polly. I think Graham should be on the call in the next few minutes.”

“Perfect,” Max said. “Just give me a moment, Henry.”

“Sure.”

Max pressed a button and then looked over at me. “Henry Jackson is one of the firm’s top clients. He owns the corporation that owns most of the strip malls in Orange, Sarasota, Charlotte, and Pinnellas Counties. He is currently bidding to buy one hundred locations in Miami-Dade County with an offer over a hundred million dollars. I’m going to need you to be professional on this call.” He gave me a pointed look.

“Excuse me, I am professional.”

“I just want to make sure you don’t bring up banging your hung boyfriend this morning on the call.” He sneered, and I pressed my lips together. “That is not something—”

“Of course I won’t,” I cut him off. Jerk.
