“What is going on here?” Max was beside us now, and he looked furious. “Polly?”

“Uhm, I think that Chelsea…”

“My sister stole my man, and now she has to choose, me or him?”

“Polly,” Max grabbed my arm, “this is not appropriate behavior for the firm.” His eyes were blazing as he looked down at me.

“Sorry,” I mumbled, feeling like I wanted to throw up. “Ben, it’s over,” I shouted at the bald man, who was standing there, looking like a confused clown. I almost felt sorry for him. “You didn’t tell me you were still sleeping with my sister. I do not condone cheating.”

“I ain’t never—” he started, but then Chelsea started screaming.

“You told me you love me. You told me I was the one.” She grabbed him by the arm. “How could you do this to me? I might be having your baby. I’m going to sue you for child support. I’m going to—”

“I’m getting out of here.” Ben stepped back, looking panicked. “I don’t know what the hell is going on, but I don’t need pussy that bad.” He chugged the rest of his beer and dropped the bottle on the ground before heading to the elevator. I watched as he entered the elevator and then left. Chelsea was now sitting on the ground, singing a Dave Matthews Band song to herself, and everyone in the room was looking like they’d just witnessed aJerry Springerepisode.

“Polly, I want you and your sister in my office, now,” Max said, growling in my ear. “I want an explanation, and I want it now.” He marched away, and I walked over to Chelsea.

“Get up,” I hissed at my sister. She glanced up at me with twinkling eyes, and I glared at her. “What the hell was that?”

“Brilliant, right?” She grinned. “Got rid of him far quicker than I thought it would. And you were right. He was not cute.”

“Chelsea, that was not the way to help me.” I grabbed her hand and pulled her up. “I bet you that Max is about to fire me.” I groaned as we made our way toward Max’s office. I could hear Travis walking behind us to the office, and I had no idea what was going to happen. I knew that I was in a lot of trouble. I knew that Travis would tell Finn. And that Finn would tell Harriet. And Harriet would tell our parents, and I would be a laughingstock. This was possibly the most embarrassing night of my life, and that was saying a lot.

Chelsea and I walked into Max’s office, followed by Travis, and I watched as Travis closed the door behind him. He walked over to Max, and both men just stared at us like they thought we were crazy.

“I have just one question for you both,” Max said, folding his arms across his chest. My face was red with embarrassment, and I was ready to come clean with all the lies.

“Yes?” I asked softly, wondering what he was going to say.

“Which mental institute did you both escape from?” he asked, a dark look in his eyes. “And if I call them now, will they come pick you up and take you back in?”

“What?” My jaw dropped at his rude comment.

“Are you going to pretend that you’re not both certifiably crazy?” he asked, shaking his head as he stepped forward. “That was a shitshow out there.”

“I wouldn’t say certifiably,” Chelsea said, grinning. “And I don’t think it was a shitshow. I think it was first-class entertainment.”

“Chelsea, shh.” I glared at her as I took a deep breath. “Look, Max, if you want to fire me, just do it now. Let’s not drag this out.”

“Oh, firing you is the last thing I want to do right now,” he said, his lips thinning. “That would be letting you off far too easily.” He looked over at Travis and smirked. “And that’s not how we run our summer intern program.”

“So then, what’s going to happen?” I asked softly, wondering what he was thinking and if I shouldn’t just give it all up and run away.

“First off, you’re going to explain to us exactly what happened tonight,” Max said softly. “And then after your first set of lies, you’re going to tell us the truth.”

Chapter20

“Ihate to do this,” Chelsea said, holding up her phone in the air. “But our sister, Harriet, just text me, and she has an emergency, and we have to leave.”

“Really?” Max’s lips thinned. “At this exact moment.”

“Yup.” Chelsea nodded, and before I knew what was happening, she was calling Harriet on speakerphone. “You can see for yourself.”

“Hey, what’s up, sis?” Harriet spoke cheerfully into the phone, and I groaned inwardly.

“It’s me and Polly.” Chelsea sounded like she was going to cry. “We’re in Polly’s boss’s office and he’s mad at us, but I just told him how you just texted me about an emergency that just came up, and I told him we have to leave. But he doesn’t believe me.” She sobbed. “So I told him I’d call you and prove that I wasn’t lying.”

“Oh.” Harriet’s tone changed immediately. “Why wouldn’t he believe you? I need you both here with me, right now. I’m so devastated. I don’t know what to do.”
