“I’m so sorry, sis,” Chelsea said. “We’ll get there as soon as possible.”

“Please hurry. I need you and Polly here with me.”

Chelsea gave Max a pointed look and then said, “As you can see, our sister needs us. Can we please go?”

“You may.” Max pressed his lips together and whispered something to Travis, who nodded. “Chelsea, Travis will show you down to the lobby. I just need to talk to Polly for a few minutes, and she will join you.” Oh shit! I swallowed hard at his words. What was he going to say to me? Was he going to fire me? Maybe that would be for the best. I wasn’t sure I would even want to have me working for them if I wasn’t me.

“Sure.” Chelsea nodded. “See you soon, Harriet.” She hung up the phone and headed to the door. “I’ll see you downstairs, Polly.”

“I’ll be there in a couple of minutes,” I said quickly, hoping that was true. Travis walked over to the door, and I watched as he and Chelsea walked out. I didn’t turn to look at Max, even though I was staring at a closed door. I didn’t even know what to say. I didn’t want to look at him.

“You have some explaining to do, Polly,” Max said softly as he walked toward me. “And I want some answers.”

“I mean, I don’t know what you want me to say.” I shook my head.

“Why don’t you start by telling me about your boyfriend?”

“What do you want to know?” I jutted my chin out at him. “Turns out he was a jerk.”

“Are you sad he won’t be banging you so hard that you can’t walk anymore?” he asked, pulling his phone out of his pocket.

“I’m not answering that.” I shook my head.

“Was he really that good in bed?” he asked, looking at his phone screen.

“No comment.” My phone pinged then, and I tried not to flinch. It was the special notification sound I’d set for the dating app.

“Are you upset that you’re not going to marry him?”

“No.”Ping!

“You can answer your phone.” Max nodded toward my purse.

“It’s fine.”Ping!

“I insist.”

“It’s fine.”Ping!“Fine.” I grabbed my phone and groaned as I saw a bunch of messages from Ben.

“Open your messages,” Max said, stepping closer to me.

“Sorry, what?” I looked up at him in surprise.

“From your dating app.” He stopped right next to me. “Open your messages.”

“What? How…” I mumbled as I felt my heart racing. Max held his phone up, and I saw he had the dating app screen on his phone. He typed into the screen, and my phone pinged. “Ben?” All color left my face. “You’re Ben.”

“Yup!” He nodded, smirking. “I was the man you’ve been chatting with.”

“But…” I frowned. “Who was that man?”

“A guy that works at a local temp agency.” He grinned. “Hired him for the night.”

“You were Ben! But…”

“I knew you were lying.” His eyes pierced mine. “I saw your screen that day you were reading your messages to Natasha.” He shrugged. “I’m not sure why you lied about having a boyfriend.”

“Because you were being an asshole and I wanted you to think I wasn’t interested in your flirting or games.”
