"It's not like we're married or something," she soothed him. "Even if Adele or Cyrus sends them to the tabloids, the story doesn't have enough legs to make it onto the front pages, much less through a whole media cycle."

"I know we are not married, but I made you a promise."

"Just like I made a promise to you, but I don't think the media is going to care about that. Do you think Cyrus and Adele have been working together since Mexico? That's weird, right? Do you think they're together again?"

He cursed viciously. "I do not care."

"Are you okay? I know this sucks, but you sound more upset than I would have expected you to be." And he was flying home.

Like the drama his brother and ex-escort were trying to create was a lot bigger than Rowan thought it was.

"What is going on?" she asked as she stepped outside to find her bodyguard behind the wheel of the hybrid SUV Lysander had purchased for her use.

It was more comfortable for her bodyguard than her compact electric car, which was why she hadn't argued about using it. And it was a hybrid. So, there was that.

"Rowan…" he ground out. "Just be there when I arrive. Promise me."

Since he would arrive sometime in the early hours of the morning if he was leaving now, where else would she be? The trip from Tokyo was nearly fourteen hours and that was just the flight.

"I'm not waiting up for you," she warned him in a teasing tone as she buckled her seatbelt. "Though, I might as well admit I was going to fly out to Tokyo tonight."

If she didn't, he'd learn soon enough from his PA.

"You were coming here?"

"Yep. It took most of the week, but I got things settled so I can work remotely next week."

"You did not want to come with me."

"I never said that. I said Icouldn'tgo with you. At least not this week." She sighed. "I know that concept is hard for your tycoon brain to take in, but some of us cannot make the world bend to our will on a daily basis. Honestly, Sander, I don't want to. Life might not always be convenient but fulfilling my obligations and making a way to join you was satisfying for me. Can you understand that?"

"Yes."

"You sound weird."

Looking out the window, Rowan was happy to note that her bodyguard had gotten the memo and they were headed to the villa and not the airport.

"Do I?"

"I guess we can talk more about our different approaches to life when you get back. Are you sure it's a good time to leave Japan? The deal won't sour, will it?"

"I don't give a…" He said a four-letter word that he almost never said around her. "I'm coming home. Those pictures are faked."

"I know."

"You know?" Lysander's voice was heavy with disbelief. "But you sent them to me."

"So you could be aware of the latest Cyrus gambit." Wait. "Did you listen to the recording?"

He didn't answer. Had the call dropped?

"Are you still there?"

"I'm here."

"Why haven't you listened to the recording?"

"When I got the pictures, I thought you were breaking up with me." The bleakness in his tone hurt her heart. "I thought the recording was a voice message telling me we are over."
