“You need to do the best you can,” Mia replied. “You want Santa to come, don’t you?”

“Oh, yes.”

Brand interrupted. “Then I suggest you sleep. Ineed to talk to Mia.”

“About the baby?”

Mia started and he shot her a warning look. “Yes, sweetie. About the baby.”

After another round of hugs and kisses, the two exited Toni’s bedroom. He gave a jerk of his head in the direction of the steps and without a word she headed down and walked directly to his office.

“This is like your principal’s office, yes?” Her accent thickened, no doubt from nerves. “When someone is in trouble?”

“Not that simple, I’m afraid.”

She flinched. “No, of course it isn’t.” Her gaze lifted, locking with his. “I’m sorry, Brand. Ididn’t mean to sound facetious.”

“You’re really pregnant?”

“Sì.”

“How?”

“The usual way.”

He simply stared ather.

She winced. “I’m sorry. This isn’t how I planned this conversation.”

“How did you plan it?”

“First, I’d planned to have it after Christmas when things weren’t so … so holiday crazy.”

“Let’s pretend it’s after Christmas and Soren didn’t out you. Kick off the conversation.”

She moistened her lips and nodded. “So, you remember how tired I’ve been? How I’m sleeping all the time?”

“No energy. Your hip and leg aching more than usual.”

“Exactly. Imanaged to get a last-minute appointment with my surgeon a few days ago. He ran a series of tests and …”

“And he told you that you’re pregnant.”

She nibbled on her lower lip before continuing. “I asked how that was possible. Corey told me I couldn’t have children. And so did the doctor. At least … I thought he did.”

“You were wrong?”

Mia bowed her head. “Apparently, he told me I might have troublegettingpregnant because of the scar tissue. My only excuse for not hearing him correctly is they had me on a lot of pain meds. Imust have misunderstood in part because of what Corey said. If I’d known the truth …” She lifted her head, tears filling her eyes. “I’ll do anything you want except give up this baby. Ihad so much trouble accepting the idea that I’d never be able to have one. To find out I was wrong? It’s like a miracle.”

“I would never ask such a thing of you.”

“Do you want me to leave? Idon’t have a lot of stuff. Ican move out tonight if that’s what you want.”

“No!” he bit out. “I want you to tell me the truth!”

Pain swept across her expression. “I … I have.”

“About everything?”
