As she headed out of her house to meet their visitor, four dogs tailing her like she was the mother duck, she saw him sitting on the hood of his sleek ride.

Yeah, this was going to be bad.

“Yo,” he said, standing.

“Reaper,” she said, heading his way. When she hugged him, he just patted her on the back.

It had been a while since he’d seen her. Oh, they talked on occasion, but face-to-face was rare for him. He only appeared to those he trusted, and this woman…

She was a good friend and had been for a long time.

“LaRue, you look good for an old broad. How’s tricks?” he asked.

She snorted.

“You’re funny. Especially since you’re just about my age, asshole. You’ve got some mileage on those boots too, my friend.”

He laughed.

“Yeah, I know. Somedays, I feel it. Are you hanging in there?” he asked.

Not far away, the dogs stared at him but didn’t bark. They were letting him near their person likely because he’d been there before.

“Oh, well, my life is definitely a lot more complicated now that I’m playing fucking ringmaster.”

He snorted.

“You don’t say? Well, power looks good on you. In fact, how is it you haven’t changed in all of these years?”

“Clean living,” she said with a straight face.

He snorted.

“Yeah, I’ve seen the kind of living you’re doing. Three men, Elizabeth? How did you get the doctor to let that shit happen?”

Oh, well, fate was weird like that. The proof was they were even seeing each other. What began years ago, nearly ended in death, and then was pulled from the fire so they could reconnect…

Miraculous.

“You know how it is. I love me a sexy man,” she said, sitting beside him.

“How’s the Red Queen?”

“She’s inside. Only, let’s get down to business, my old friend. I’m sure you’re not here to celebrate that New Orleans is cleaned up because I just called you in, and while you’re good, Reaper, you’re not that good.”

He snorted again.

“Ouch, LaRue. That stings. Ye of little faith in a Spider.”

“Uh-huh. Spill it.”

He was honest.

“I’m here to update you and get back. I would have emailed, but I don’t trust the government. Wait. I don’t trust OUR government.”

Ironically, neither did she.

That was saying a whole hell of a lot too since she WAS the government.
