“Exactly. You hovered like a ninety-year-old Nona when her grandchild was visiting.”

He laughed.

“How do you really feel?” he joked.

“You are a hover partner. That was who you were well before Preston died. He doesn’t like a hoverer. I saw that as an issue long before when you and he first became a couple. I also noticed something else.”

Gene sipped his coffee.

“That I’m in over my head?”

Oh, well, that was a whole other conversation.

“No, how’s the sex life?”

He laughed.

“Well, this is awkward. I don’t ask about your sex life,” ex-lover.”

Was he going to try to evade?

Really?

Well, Ethan knew how to prove this point.

He was honest.

“I dominate the fuck out of Elizabeth and Christopher. I team up with Callen, and we spend hours taking what we want when we have sex. That’s who I am, Gene. That’s who I’ve always been even when I was with you. I don’t get fucked, Gene. I fuck. Now, tell me about the compromises you’re making that aren’t working.”

Gene said nothing.

Why?

He was right.

Ethan kept going.

“I’m going to profile you and tell you part of the problem. Humor me and if I’m wrong, I’ll stop.”

Gene leaned back and laughed.

“You always were bossy,” he said, dropping his arm over Ethan’s shoulder because he’d done that so many damn times before.

Then, he realized what it looked like to anyone watching.

When he went to move, Ethan stopped him.

“Don’t. You aren’t doing anything wrong. This is us, Gene. This is who we are.”

“Your wife.”

He stopped him.

“She isn’t going to care if it pops up in the media that we’re having an affair behind her back. You can trust me because she does,” he said. “I swear, Gene.”

He slowly put it back, and that love flooded him. This was the first man he ever loved, and this was the one stability in his life.

Even when Ethan had called him to invite him to his wedding over a decade ago, he’d still promised he’d be there for him, and he had.
