“I told Jagger and Maura I was leaving. They asked about Tommy. Tell me it’s okay to walk away when I know staying is going to get him killed. I can’t survive watching that again, EJ. I am not strong enough. Save me.”

Well, then, he would.

“I tell you what? I’ll talk to Elizabeth about a job. She’s looking for investigators. If she says yes, then, come back. Move back to DC and live and work there.”

He stared into his eyes.

“Let me help you find your way back, Gene. Let me show you that you are worthy of that kind of love. You don’t have to settle. We’ll protect you for a change.”

God.

He wanted that.

Gene felt so empty.

“Thank you.”

Ethan didn’t get to say anything else. His phone chimed, and he knew who it would be.

Elizabeth.

He pulled it from his pocket and read the message that she’d sent him.

‘Handsome, I’m on my way to the police precinct to play investigator—ironically not to solve a case by confusing the fuck out of the local law. Bring Gene back to the hotel with you and keep him safe until we can patch him back up. He’s family. We’ll talk then. I love you—E.’

He read it.

Oh, there was no doubt in his mind that Raphael was telling Ivan everything that was going down, and he was relaying it to Elizabeth.

When he looked over at the vehicle, the window was down, and both Saint and Raphael were grinning at him.

“Yentas!” he shouted as he laughed.

“What’s that about?” he asked.

“My security is a bunch of nosey grandmothers. Ignore it,” he said.

Because more people were beginning to swarm, and there were more pictures, it was time to move.

“Let’s go to a hotel,” Ethan said.

Gene laughed.

“Mr. Blackhawk, don’t tempt me. I’m susceptible to Natives.”

That amused Ethan because he was well aware that he absolutely was.

Standing up, Ethan tossed the brown paper bag that the beignets had been in into the trash and held out his hand.

Gene took it and was pulled up to his feet. Then, Ethan did something he didn’t expect.

He showed him the text message.

When Gene read it, he sighed.

“I want to be jealous of that woman and what she has, but I love her too.”

Ethan was well aware. Elizabeth genuinely loved Gene because he was part of their family.
